Looking for an idea on what level of investment is involved for a fun, non competitive e46 track car.

Have a look in the Readers Cars section as quite a few guys are building them there...

I'd have thought that the largest cost was the base car...

E36 is cheaper to buy, lighter, etc.

However, if you want an E46, I would budget 7k for a decent-ish one.

Strip out the interior, can probably sell the bits to fund some upgraded suspension.

At a minimum, you're going to want suspension/brakes/tyres...

So, 10k?
