Opinions on sheddage

So the 306 is on its' last legs and about to go off to the great scrapyard in the sky. Think the turbo is on the way out and MOT runs out in 3 weeks time and it is just not worth spending any money on

Having a look about for a new motor for about a grand, and think I have found one so was wanting to see if anyone had experience or opinions (more the experience as if it was opinions I wouldn't be looking at one of these)

02 plate Toyota Avensis 2.0VVTI GLS

12 months test and 6 months tax. Full history, 2 owners, 103k, 4 new tyres and just had a service. All electrics work (score one up against the pug there ). Even has 6 cd changer in dash and built in sat nav

It drives superbly with no knocks or rattles.

I know some may find them uninspiring etc. but I need something reliable and this is so far ahead of a t reg 306 in every way

So, in short, is there anything to look out for and what are they like to live with?

If you can cope with drunken idiots on a Friday night trying to flag you down because they think you are a cab then their are vastly worst pieces of metal out there. Personally they are not for me, but that was more down to the fact that when test driving one I couldn't get comfortable and it just felt like I was driving around in white good, but again thats purely personal taste.

A Toyota with full service history........erm it will last for 5 million years!!

Not my thing but if you want trouble free motoring I cant see where you are going to go wrong here for the money!

He is selling to fund a new gearbox for his Voyager to keep the wife sweet. £850 plus scrap value for the pug to drive until that is fixed (3 weeks MOT and a months tax)

I know it is not the most appealing or exciting car, but it will be my only motor so I need the reliability factor, and it seems like a fair bit of car for the money

Insurance company have not bent me over as much as expected if I decide to go with it either. Extra £100 inc the admin charge to cover from now until end of April

Years ago I bought a Carina II 1.6 with 101k on thc lock and it ran like a watch. Sold it a year later for the same money. Dull but with leccy windows and some nice blue velour seats, I rather liked it.

Aren't the petrol engines supposed to be surprisingly good on fuel, the 1.8 version at least?

I had one of these as a work car for a few months. Very boring but nothing fell off and it went ok. I seem to remember it was pretty lousy on fuel though??

I have a 53 reg avensis estate. I have literally spent nothing on this car. It runs great. It is a white good but as cheap transport it is fine. Does 42 mpg on a long run too. Which for a 1.8 petrol is ok.
Before this I had a vw golf gt tdi 150. This car was nothing but trouble for the last year with a variety of problems. The toyota has no turbo no dmf no chocolate cam shaft and is chain driven.
I have a motorbike for fun fortunately as the Toyota is definately merely transport. The one your talking about sounds ok to me thg.

Yes unfortunately my experience with vw is not a good one. Also had a passat and the gearbox broke on that 8 months out of warranty and with 68k on the clock. Got a Lexus too which has been very good also. You have to keep an eye on the oil level with the Toyota thg. Not sure if this is common or just mine. Mines done 85k.
