Best sounding (standard) cars?

Just been watching an old Top Gear, and it got me thinking, what cars sound best as they come out the box?

Off the top of my head, my top three would be:

- Mercedes CLK63 AMG Black
- Jaguar XKR-S
- Aston Martin Vanquish

Also, any TVR seems to be worth a listen!

The list above are all V8's I believe...what's your aural tipple?

Tough one, as nothing produced in significant quantities can leave the showroom with a rorty exhaust, so everything from Honda Type Rs, Imprezas to Supras and Skylines, even VXR8s and 911s sound flat and a dull with the factory exhaust system.

However, all of the above cars sound incredible with decent aftermarket exhaust systems on them, the quality sound is just hidden away when you buy the car.

Anything exotic and produced in small volumes enough to not need to meet the strict noise outputs regs the bigger volume stuff is stuck to will sound good.

My vote would go to the Lexus LFA I think, reminds me of an F1, a real bit of sonic art from Yamaha.

Of mainstream four cylinder engines, I like the sound of performance Honda VTEC units. Civic Type-R or S2000.

Five cylinders - Focus RS / ST sound nice as standard and are reasonably attainable (pity Ford couldn't sell the RS with the exhaust they used when they first exhibited it at Goodwood).

Six cylinders - M3 CSL

Eight cylinders - F355 or the recent 6.3 AMG cars.
