So, after scrabbling round dealers all week trying to find a Lupo for the wife, we find a place call Cestrefeld Car Centre in Chesterfield which has one in, amongst a bunch of fairly generic usual second hand car dealership fair.

So on we walk, and I stumble across an aladdins cave of classic VWs. All seeming reasonable priced. Couple of mk1 golf drivers (one with uber low mileage), some mk2 Polo Coupes, split screen campers and a burgandy X reg Audi 80 1.6gl, complete with original velour interior. its on 56k miles on an X reg.

It was amazing. No rust, only mods are a set of bbs wheels and some coilovers. Not 'stanced', bit just the right reduction in arch/wheel gap ratio. It even smells like the 80s.

He's asking for £3.5k

I've never had a classic car (or an Audi) before, so I've no idea what to expect. Is the asking price reasonable?

Should I just nut up and getting shedding (and have a furious arguement with the wife)?

You could buy a lot of more interesting Audi for the same or less....

£3.5k is between 3x and 4x the value of that car, and a £3.5k car certainly isn't 'shedding', nor is it a 'classic'.

It's old AND boring. Might as well just get something newer/better and just as boring.

At £1.5k as something different to your average shed very worth a punt, at the asking not a chance.

This is what I was thinking, but I cannot find a similar one for sale anywhere to benchmark it against.

Why would you, weren't you shopping for a Lupo laugh
Don't forget about the Seat Arosa.

That's really expensive. Like 3 or 4 times what it should be.
I had a 1989 80 and a 1990 90. They're very well put together cars and mine were reliable. Not particularly exciting but competent and a real step up from the XR3i I had before!

They are old cars now though, and for that money you could get something far younger. Older A4s would be around this.

Nice older car but too much money. I agree with £1500 max if it's a minter.

They were good cars at the time, but that was thirty years ago.

Do you really want a daily driver without power steering, aircon and abs?

It'll probably ave power steering and ABS, both of mine did and they were a lot older.

Possibly; but I had an '86 80 Sport which didn't have pas.

Anyway, I agree with the general consensus; good car but way over-priced.

I have an audi Cabriolet, which is audi 80 based. Great car, very reliable, left out in all weathers and always starts first time, i've had it nearly 10 years now. As mentioned they are not modern and asking price sounds very expensive. they are a quality car but by lacking modern comforts. Would defintitly recommend, but all at the right price, maybe look around and be patient!

I love old Audi's, the 80, 90, Coupe etc. But really, a 1.6gl Audi 80 for £3.5k? You know that's not right.

See if you can find the 1.8 Sport they did with the 1.8 Golf GTI engine, they were great, even better hold out for a quatro 90 or similar.

Dont discount that eighties Audi 100/200 either, get a turbo 200 and you have most of an Audi UR Quatro, I think they are cheap now and due to go up
along with every other older fast Audi, if you are brave seek out an Audi V8.

My 90 was a quattro. The 2.2 5 pot version, a very capable thing and one of my favorite ever cars. They just feel solid and un-flappable.
I completely cocked up an overtake in Ireland and ended up having to take a 90 degree turn at 90mph on the opposite hard shoulder when the car 2nd from the front of a line pulled out at 50.
In most of the cars I've had before or since I'd have had a very fast scenery interface but the Audi just did it.

I did 24k miles in 15 months in it due to working around the UK and Ireland. I got rid of it in a moment of madness because it was doing a pretty steady 25mpg (I had an even heavier foot then) and needed a few jobs doing. I stupidly traded it against a hateful Saab 9000 that I had for 4 months.

I still look out for good ones now and again.

These are some comparisons...

http://www.4starclassics.com/Audi-80-LS-For-Sale/

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C327663

Or theres an Audi 100 for sale, which has a stack more miles on - http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C319583

Hmmm. Probably right that its over priced. Time to get my haggling boots on, or change tack and look at the 5 door Golf Driver of the same vintage they had.

(P.S. this wouldn't be a daily, more of a toy.)

The LHD to RHD conversion forgot to include a place to rest your left foot when not on the clutch; a good enough reason not to buy it as far as I'm concerned.

And (as others have said) it's grossly overpriced.
