Vauxhall Monaro...what's you view?
Discussion
Afternoon all,
For some reason the Monaro passed me by but I do love a V8 and have recently found myself checking them in the classifieds, I've had a look at a few clips on you tube, read a few bits on Monkfish performance website, seen it is a 4 star car in Evo magazine and although not blown away by the looks I do like them and they appear so much car for the money.
Can anyone share their experiences of ownership?
Running costs? fuel will be high but that doesn't really concern me.
Service cost and intervals?
Any know weak points to look for?
How do they drive? I know the LS2 has 400bhp but they look a heavy car, are there 0-60, 0-100 and qtr mile figures?
Thanks all.

I recently bought one and sold it soon after.
They are GT cars and they really aren't very fast due to their weight and stupidly high gearing.
If you want a GT car I'm sure you'll like it.
Mine was 385bhp and wasn't much faster to 100 than my 210bhp MX5. I now have the same engine in my RX7 which is approx 500kg lighter and the gearing is much shorter and it's VERY FAST.
Oh and if you have kids the front seats are electric and annoyingly slow to move.

Great car, but respect it, it can seriously bite you in the arse (as I have just found out to my cost).
Weak points
1. Spigot bearing on the gearbox.
2. Diff seals can leak and weap.
3. Front top mounts can decay and cause the car to sit heavy.
All of the above from my own experience and I had them all replaced.
Mine gave me a 4 figure repair inside 5 months, but I knew it was coming because the dealer disclosed it and I factored in the costs.
Fuel is stupid (high teens, low 20's).
It's all worth while when you have a sunny day, window down and a clear road. The noise makes it all worthwhile, and it is really the engine you are paying for.
Just don't buy one thinking it will be epically fast out of the box, its a 400bhp, 1650KG car with high gearing. Treat it like a GT and you'll love it.

Funny you should mention that...a friend of mine has an engine-less RX8 and has offered it to me for £600...I had considered the possibility of putting the LS2 in it...alas I have zero technical knowledge so would have to pass the project, and i image a few quid, to an experienced garage for them to do the conversion.007 VXR said:
With the right mods these are great and very fast cars.
(fast) depends on what you are used to IMHO.
As for MPG ,
Depends on your driving style, but arond town
You will get mid teens, on a run mim to high 20s
Most avg around 20mph.
What are the right mods generally considered to be and what difference would that make in terms of power and pounds spent?(fast) depends on what you are used to IMHO.

I drive an HR 350z which I love, I get about 22 mpg with that, I do enjoy a nice sounding rear wheel drive...but the V8 soundtrack really is something else.

Very tunable engines. This is being dropped into mine next week:
Should be good for 800HP or thereabouts. Gives the car super bike performance in the dry at least. The engine really defines the car and the standard, 400 HP engine is the starting point.
One of our members with a twin turbo LS7 did 206mph at Vmax last year. That was with 4 people in the car!

As standard they are not as quick as they should be.
The 6 litre cars are the ones to get as the gearing is shorter they have.more power and are generally better in my opinion.
A cat back is near essential to bring out the noise. I would also look at the addition of a short shifter.
Lots of the VXR s have now had the nice to have mods done. Most have had cat back remap and shortshifter which will make a.noticable difference.though only 20bhp in reality. I bought mine with a shortened rear diff, full exhaust headers cats, re map and shortshifter for only a slight premium over a standard car yet it goes noticabley better and sounds great.
If you really want to shift forget the VXR 500's as they demand a premium and get supercharged one preferable by monkfish. They are running usually 600bhp
at the fly and not overly stressed.
The HSV section will prove your friend.
