General Grabbers - AT2 vs. UHP Difference?
Discussion
Thanks, that was how I understood it hence a little confused how the AT2 is getting good ratings for a general road tyre.
Be interested to know if anyone is using the UHP's. There's so much choice out there that part of me thinks just stick with the original Continental's that were fitted from new (Freelander 2).

If you are driving a 4x4 and in need to replace your current set of tyres, please think of which kind of roads you drive on most.
If you only drive on normal roads, then do not pick AT...
If you only drive on normal roads, please choose something other than UHP to replace normal road driving, UHP really are just gimmick, if you can find the correct size tyres from the same brand, e.g. Continental Sport Contact 5 instead of UHP, then please choose CSC5 and not UHP.

Well the AT2 is an all terrain tyre, i.e. good on and off road. The UHP is a road only tyre just like a normal car tyre. My Landcruiser had UHPs on the front when I bought it and they are worse than useless off road. If you own a 4x4 then all terrain tyres are the minimum that you should have on it IMHO.
The AT2 is considered a good price/performance AT tyre, I went for the more expensive BF Goodrich ATs myself.

I had UHP's on my Jeep until recently......for the type of vehicle they proved a good tyre... Lasted well, wore evenly and performed acceptably on the road.....
I did do some light green laning on them, and they were ok, but they are more for road use...
I plan on doing a few play days, and a bit more laning so I've just swapped the UHP's for some cooper AT's.
Haven't tried them off road yet, but on Tarmac they seem fine..

In reality like most 4x4 owners the closest I get to going off-road is if I do a three point turn and have to go on the grass. I'd love to have some badass looking off-road tyres on the car but not if it compromises 99% of the driving I will be doing.
My priority is getting something suitable for doing 75mph up and down the dual carriageways every day but that can also deal with the occasional bit of snow that we're likely to get in the Midlands - and most feedback seems to be that an FL2 with pretty much anything decent on it should be more than up to this.

UHPs wear out quickly, you cant get AT2's any more (EU noise regulations or some such rubbish) they have been replaced with the slightly more road-biased Grabber AT. i have them on my disco, they are comfortable on the motorway, and easily drag me out of a muddy field. just as good as the AT2s were, but apparently quieter...
We have had UHP's on the 4.7v8 Jeep for the last 20k miles.
I find them excelent on the road - very good wear rate on a heavy car which has a bit of grunt and gets driven faster than it should.
Off road - acceptable for a road biased tyre with occasional use and also very good in last years snow.
But - they dont have the sipes in the tread pattern like a proper off road/snow tyre,

I too found the UHP's to last well...... They'd do even better if they weren't directional, and you could swap corner to corner..I find them excelent on the road - very good wear rate on a heavy car which has a bit of grunt and gets driven faster than it should.

I've run two L200's on AT2's over the last 6 years.
The first did a lot of green laning and the tyres were great.
My current L200 doesn't go of road typically, but as I live around many farms the roads are often s
tted up by those pesky farmer types.
4 years / 30k miles of constant road use and the tyres look hardly worn...

I have the UHPs on my Mercedes ML350, which gets road use only. I am very happy with them. They have excellent grip in all conditions and they appear to be very hard wearing. After 5000 miles of driving the tread depth is barely changed. Impressive considering the ML weighs over 2 tonnes.

Unless you don't use it on all terrains and only use it on road then a road tyre makes much more sense... chris182 said:
