Hi,

I know you can P/X a car in when buying one from a dealer, but do any dealers buy cars from you for same value as P/X even if you don't want to buy a car from them?

I want to sell my A8 and it is proving difficult, i want an 06 Lexus IS250. Both similar value according to Parkers but i want it sorted swiftly.

Cheers,

N Dentressangle

Yes, they do, but expect to get a pretty low offer.

If you actually PX your car for one the dealer is selling, the dealer makes money on both sides of the deal: profit on the car he's selling, and profit when he sells the car he's buying from you.

Of course, only one side of the deal needs to be profitable for the dealer, so he can charge full price for his car and give you very generous PX value, or he can discount his car heavily and give you a low PX value.

It depends how desperate you are to sell. Have you tried We Buy Any Car? They'll give you an idea of what to expect, at any rate.

Yes a dealer may buy your car however if its not a desirable spec, wrong engine etc they may say they don't want it or they may bid low, you are struggling to sell it, there may be a good reason.

We buy any car offered a tad over 3 grand which i would keep the car instead of 'giving away' such a vehicle for so little.

Was offered £4500 off a dealer against a GS300 but surely i will get another £1000 or so private, if i just wait (hard to do!)

It's not always about how much you can get for your car.......it's about the cost to change...smile

I only want to spend about 1-1.5k on the Lexus which looking on autotrader would get me a nice example fully loaded IS. Providing i got 5-5.5k for the Audi

I think you made need to revise your idea of the value for your car based on what you have stated already?

What are they going for privately?

Mine is listed for £5700 ish which is just below parkers valuation of a good private, and is below most on autotrader/PH

Im assuming without knowing the year or mileage and the fact you have been offered 3k directly in the trade to 4.5k as a trade in the car is worth no where near 5.5k that you are relying on getting.

If you have 1.5k to spend and are looking at cars for 7k id suggest you re-adjust your budget to 4.5-5k as thats probably your realistic figure.

55 plate and 100,000 miles. If i was offered £4500 as a P/X then i am definatley right to expect £5,500 as a private sale. A dealer buying at £4,500 is going to sell for what, £6,200?

I think your missing the point of some of the other posts above.

A trade purchase only valuation was 3k, i.e nearer what the cars 'actually' worth in the trade.

A part exchange valuation was 4.5k, i.e the dealer either wanted the car or had a shed load of money to knock off his car that he really wants shot of so 4.5k could well be no where near its actual value.

If you went to buy a new car and they had 5k they could knock off the list price and say offered you 8k as a part ex then your maths of the cars got to be worth 1k more private, would you then be realistic in asking 9k as a private sale for it?

I think Parkers has long ceased to have any relevance to actual used car prices.

Your car will sell for what the market thinks it's worth

What model, year, plate etc is it?

Parkers isn't a great valuation tool.

So a car which i bought 10 months ago for close to 7 grand from a indi dealer is now not worth more than 5 grand? That seems a bit odd.

55 A8 SE 3.0 multitronic (the gearbox and fuel choice i would guess being the downfall)

Bingo, gearbox wont be too much of an issue but the fuel price and running costs will be.

In these times of ppl downsizing, every man and his dog who is half interested in buying big lumps of metal (not many people) want a bargain and the traders know this.

Ultimately the car is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

If you were a trader would you sink your 3-4k into something like this or a couple of year old supermini that is much more likely to sell and probably still have a warranty on it?

A quick CAP valuation (with the info given) books the car between £3100 - £3825.

there is a nice 2006 IS for £5600 so i guess if i P/X mine against it i would probably get it within my budget. the 200 mile trip to ask a dealer 'what is mine worth to him' doesn't appeal though.

Glass's guide (trade) gives £5150 adjusted for miles! That's on an 05 the model isn't listed as 55.
You know what they say, Glass's for selling, CAP for buying... wink

Sounds about right, you've got to assume on a car like that the dealer proably paid £4.5-5K for it a year ago.
