Was pondering yesterday whilst driving our very slow Citroen C1 how easily it will exceed speed limits and how with enough grim determination, a tail wind and a hill will get you into ban territory (eventually).

So was pondering, those of you out there with properly fast stuff, how do you avoid being caught for high speed, do you not do it, save it for the track, use specific roads you know are relatively "safe" or some combination. I have a manky old Porsche and it exceed every speed limit in the country in a few seconds so was considering a Nissan GTR which will exceed the motorway limit, from standstill in less than 5 seconds, so from legal pace to very illegal pace you are talking perhaps 4 seconds, say 60-100, and then people tune them to make them even faster ! Supercars and very quick stuff, around town always seems to be driven sensibly but I cant imagine they never get given some stick, I mean, what would be the point.

So, how do you manage that temptation, how do you mitigate the risk and has anyone been caught out in something properly fast whilst stretching its legs ?

I've made my really fast vehicle look like a police car. If I want to go fast, I just pop the blue lights on and away I go.

If I pass any other police cars they just wave. smile

Which is why my really fast car doesn't move out of the garage nowadays as other cars on the road hold it up. My really, really fast bike however I use all the time !!!!

For me, it's getting to the speed limit as fast as I can that gives the "thrill", as it were. Obviously I don't hoon from standstill to 30 at every inner-city set of traffic lights, but motorway slip roads, transitions to NSL, etc. are where the speed bit of the fun is.

I used to go for blasts down B roads. Average speed was high as you could make progress out of the bends and carry a fair bit of speed around them. Was great fun and there wasnt many places you could go into ban speeds

ide say its much more about having fun sensibly when you can. - I second the comment about b-roads, if you know the road, and a good line of sight, you can have good fun without breaking the limit.

If I were ever to exceed the speed limit, which of course I wouldn't, it would definitely be a case of the right road at the right time; the right time being about 6am in the summer months.

My Elise isn't "really fast" with 60 in about five seconds and 100 in about 13, but it's still enough performance that it's difficult to really exercise it legally. It would be very easy to find oneself uncomfortably into three figures.

I'm not sure what I would do with the extra performance, but there is still an itch to supercharge it. Totally irrational.

Not really, most, if not all 600 plus sportsbikes do 70 odd in first, so just don't get out of 1st gear.

It's great, all the best bits of an auto with none of the drawbacks, just leave in 1st or 2nd and aim at the horizon...

Just about to enjoy public transport for a few weeks as a result of stretching my K1200s legs a little. I suppose traffic keeps most cars within sensible limits.

Local knowledge and reading the road well ahead. The local plod have their favourite spots to 'hang out' and I know all of them.

On unfamiliar roads I drive a lot more cautiously.

For me it's the acceleration and knowing the car has masses of potential for swift over-taking at a moment's notice. Top speed is kind of pointless on over-crowded UK roads.

At the end of the day, it's the same with anything that has a lot more potential than is realistically viable to use in every day circumstances. Such as massively powerful stereos. You can get into bother with the law for using excessive volume too smile

You're driving the wrong car if you can only have fun above legal speeds.

Other than the odd foot to the floor acceleration run every now and then when there is nobody around I save it for the drag strip, but then I enjoy my car even pootling around town smile

When driving or riding something with significant grunt, there's enough pleasure in knowing that you could if you wanted to without actually doing it.

My XK8 has a fair amount of power and getting to the speed limit is effortless, in fact it's an effort to keep it at the speed limit when the traffic is light.

I basically rely on using cruise control for the bulk of my journeys and enjoy the other aspects the car has - great seating, the quietness of the car, a B&W stereo and cornering power.

I drive a van in the daytime which couldn't break the speed limit if it tried so most of my car driving is done at night or the weekends when the police with the speed guns are pretty scarce.Local knowledge again is a big help and if i am driving in an unfamiliar place i will be exra carefull.

With the roads and traffic the way they are these days it is difficult to speed at the best of times so if i do fancy going out to enjoy my car then it has to be the right time and place on roads I know well.

Only had one SP30 in 20 yrs of driving, all of which have been performance cars so I've not done too bad.

And if you are thinking of a GTR,I can highly recommend them!thumbup

I sold the fast cars and bought a slow car. Problem solved.
