How do I find out if I can change from a larger tyre to a smaller tyre and if it will fit the same wheel?

Say I have now 285/30 R 19

would a 255/35/R 19 fit as well?

You have to have an appropriate size tyre for the width of your wheel.

In addition, you have to have a similar rolling radius to the original tyre or your speedo will be miles out. Use a tyre calculator for this:

you need to check the width of the rim/wheel - are they still stamped on the reverse? If not a tyre shop can do that.

then look somehwere like here http://www.alloywheels.com/Tyre_Calculator

Better tell your insurnace company if its a no standard fitment?
