Have you ever missed out on a Gem?
Discussion
I missed out a week ago on a one owner E21 323 BMW. It was advertised in Tescos of all places. I rang the guy, it had sold within 5 hours. It had 33000miles and sold for £550. It was also only for sale in Tesco so I feel the old boy didn't know what he had. I'm gutted, It sounded like a solid car and worth 4x the price he wanted atleast
What have you missed and always thought "Bugger"

Assuming it was looked after that was pretty cheap! Used to see them in local free ads paper for round that price about 10-12 years back ........ Then they all seemed to get scrapped or disappear. Rarely see one now round our way but a decade back there were 4 or 5 whizzing about. What have you missed and always thought "Bugger"
Great fun car
A BMW 328i, in bright Red with all the right bits on going for £3000. I was on my way to buy it (around 6 years ago) and when I arrive a lady was putting a deposit down on it
I found another one within an hour by purchasing a local Auto Trader (I was 100 miles away at the time) which turned out to be a fantastic car, but the Red one had it pipped in the looks department.

My mum had a ComputerVision liveried Metro 6R4 at home for quite a while. It was an ex Tony Pond RAC rally reece car that the factory wanted to sell & at they time they couldn't give the things away.
The car had been up for sale for months without generating any interest so rather than leave the thing in storage the boss gave my mum the keys & she brought it home one night & stuck it in the garage.
We would start the car up every week, which annoyed the neighbours, & then give it a quick blast around the local roads.
Just before it was eventually sent for auction my mum had the opportunity to buy it for around £12k (if my memory serves me correctly) .
She wanted it, I wanted & yet....... She didn't buy it because my dad, who had/has no interest in cars at all, said simply 'no. It's just a bloody noisy little Metro'.
So it went & is now worth around £70k!!!

Yep, because I had no money.
The car in question was an utterly immaculate 318 Ti Compact E36 with a 328 engine, 325 throttle bodies and inlet manifold, remap, upgraded brake and suspension system, no rust, and utterly standard looking even down to the badge and small alloys. A true sleeper. £1700 it went for

MK1 MX5, one elderly owner from new, travelled 3000 miles, FMDSH, driven 25 miles a month to keep things nice - advertised at £4k.
Asked him to run it up to operating temp and report oil pressure, old chap did as requested, called back and said he enjoyed the drive so much that he couldn't part with it.

Had the chance to buy an immaculate S1 Escort RS Turbo, fully original and mint with only 35k on the clock...Bloke only wanted 3k for it, not sure if he realised what he had.
I'm on the way back from the bank, when I get a call. He decided to take a little drive down the road to take some final momentos, only for a Laguna to smash into the back of it at the lights. Complete write off.

A favourite saying of mine and my mum's is "Should have had Izzy"- A gorgeous Morgan-style kit car my aunt owned for ages which they sold for peanuts when they got into money bother...
Another example which her and my gran still wistfully wonder is whether it would have been worth them holding on to their Mercedes 350SL Gullwing back when they sold for peanuts! Aaaargh

Audi 90 Quattro 20V Sport with tubular headers. Very rare metal indeed and sat in a scrappers car park in Leeds. Nothing visibly wrong with it - in fact it looked nearly mint. Been handed in the day before by an old gent who didn't think it was worth anything. This was before metal prices rose - he got £80 for it. Registered as scrapped and bled dry mere hours before I got there.

Years ago, we are talking 12 years or so, I worked in parts for a VW garage, they had taken in an Oak green MkII Golf GTi 8v as a trade in.
This Golf was the big bumper version with factory split BBS alloys and a service history as long as your arm, it was immaculate, I took it for a drive and agreed to buy it however unbeknown to the salesman who had taken it in the car had already been sold to someone, I was gutted.

Yup, hesitated on an immaculate 9000 mile Peugoet 205 Gentry (GTI engine but autobox and a plush interior) for a bag. It sold an hour later to a trader who then turned it around for £4500
Not a lot of money involved but that is one car I regret not buying, not from a profit point of view but rarity considering its miles and as new condition.
