Father in law has crashed his MGF. The car is his pride and joy and he paid about £18k for it back in 2000.
The cars front end is damaged. I haven't seen the damage, but he tells me it needs a new front bumper, headlights, front indicators etc.

His insurance excess is about £300, and he is keen to get it repaired without going through the insurance, I think he is worried about loosing no claims etc. I will check if he has protected no claims tomorrow morning.

He wants to keep the car for the long term, so what is the best way to get it repaired? Shall we go via the insurance company or try and get it done privately?

My idea (which maybe wrong) is to go via the insurance and pay the £300 excess. The car will probably be written off as MGFs are worthless. We could buy back the salvage and repair with the insurance money. What do you think?

Please help.....

Try and get it done privately. Insurance is a piece of paper that says you can drive, and a fallback for ENORMOUS claims. It's not there for anything less than 4 figures really. And they WILL write it off, give you a pittance, and take the pittance back in renewals and then some. SO yeah, do it privately.

insurance will write it off

dont mention it all to the insurance company , if you are capable get the parts yourself and then get some quotes to paint it to a good standard then refit the bits in bobs yourself

Why is that BS? It's a 12 year old MGF. As much as the OPs father might love it, it's worth two thirds of fk all and will cost a lot more than that to fix.

Serious? A "Fall back" for enormous claims? Only claim for less then 4 figures? Surely defeats the point of insurance, does your policy have a 1k excess then?

MGFs are being written off for minor crashes ATM as they are deeply out of fashion. Shame as they are great cars and I can see why he wants to keep it. 40mpg looks more and more sensible as petrol chases the gold price up as well. I got my TF as a cheap fun everyday driver and was in love wth it by the time I parked it on my drive. Its an agreed value, but if it was a £300 job I just would pay myself.

The 12 year old car is worth about thirty six pence.
Just find parts from a scrappy and fix it up, an insurance estimate will easily write the car off unfortunately, unless he can then go on to buy it back and fix it up.

The OP doesn't say if there was any other party involved. If so, report to insurance. If not, then maybe not.

Dealer near me has a 2009 MG TF LE500 in orange with black wheels, 18K miles for £7800. Not a huge fan of these cars but this one looks fantastic. I reckon it could be secured for £7K, especially this time of year.

Get some pictures posted up & we will tell what it'll cost to fix. If the inner wings & front valance are ok it'll be a nut & bolt job. If your lucky you'll find an Ebay'er selling all the bits you need in the right colour as he has HGF & scrapping it. £150 should buy you a complete front end maybe.

Thanks chaps - I will pop over and get some pictures tomorrow. He didn't speak to me very much on the phone this evening, probably shock. he is seventy and has been driving for 40+ years without incident.

ETA: Found company called Moss that seem to sell everything required for a re-build. Parts look expensive compared to buying a knackered (HGF) MGF.

Right, back to my ale drinking.

Summit in Maidenhead are MG specialists, they have a stock of parts of broken cars and if its a bolt on job can do it.

im sure an MGF can be replaced just be thankful he didn't get seriously hurt

can you not just do what parents do when a pet rabbit dies and get another one the same colour spec

he won't notice, something along the lines of

"yes, isn't that wonderful, fluffy now has a magic spot he didn't have yesterday, you must have wished for it"

i'm going to be a cruel parent i know

100% correct. To the point that I always go with a £1000 excess, I know that I will never claim for anything less that that. Protected no claims is total B/S. You may have it but get to the next question where you are asked if you have claimed over the last 50+ years and you may as well not have any no claims.

My advice would be to get a few private quotes, see what you can do yourself, and get the pro's to finish it off. At least then you wont have to buy any lubrication from the shafting you get from your Insurer!

Car insurance - another rip off.

I agree.
Claiming for much less than a grand is a waste of time by the time you
factor in excess, loss of no claims and increased premiums.
I agree that claiming for the MGF would be a waste of time, they`ll write it off!

Thanks everyone. As promised i have taken some photos today.

It looks like i only need a front PU, Headlights and indicators.

Moss want £178 for the PU unsprayed. Looks like Summit MG will be repairing this.

There was another party involved. No damage to their car and no injury. They are not claiming any damages and do not want repair.
Father in law has protected NCB of over 9 years.

He would like to keep the car if possible, so I guess that its a repair......

That bumper can be repaired and painted with no issue at all. I'd be sourcing two second hand headlights and fogs, and handing it into a bodyshop. There is really no need to go through insurance for minor damage like that at all.

If you are 100% certain the other party aren't going to play silly buggers then get that repaired privately. Going through insurance will lead to inflated premiums for next 3-5 years and they won't pay out much either, there are 2002-2003 cars on AT for around £1200, so presumably this will be worth even less.

Either sell this one for bits and buy another or buy the bits an repair yourself.
