I am changing the wheels a lot between the off roading ones and the standard road tyres for my solid axle 1999 Jeep Cherokee and am considering a trolley jack to make quicker than using the standard bottle jack.
First question is it safe to jack up both wheels at a time by putting a trolley jack under the diff? (obviously i would put axle stands under before working)
Second question, should i for this?

Or is it worth paying the extra for this?

the only thing about the halfords one is i am not sure if the saddle would be big enough to securely jack it under the diff?

Those machine mart ones are crap, the release mechanism is difficult, you twist the handle to release it, but they lock up and it becomes difficult to turn, you put more effort in and suddenly it releases and the car flies to the floor.
I thought mine would ease up a little as it got older but it hasn't
I bought this one relatively recently : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000RA2ZD8
Lifts higher, more capacity, no silly release mechanism and cheaper..

Go to Costco. Buy an Arcan 3ton trolley jack for about 85 quid. Well built bit of kit.
Other than that, buy a Sealey. Clarke trolley jacks in my experience have been poor.
+1 for the steel Arcan. The alloy jack is available again and its very pretty, but the steel jack is cheaper, lifts more, higher nd its far more reliable.Other than that, buy a Sealey. Clarke trolley jacks in my experience have been poor.
I have just bought one of the Clarke ones from Machine Mart. I'd already got a cheap one from Machine Mart which looks similar to the Halfords one, and you need to be careful of the length of the handle and the minimum movement to pump. I had got it to try to jack a Transit, but it was too short when the plate was under the diff to pump the handle (too many degrees required to have an effect, and the handle fouled the rear of the body). I borrowed one like the Machine Mart jack to do the job.
You may have a bit more space under a 4x4, but I'd still recommend something with a longer reach (and check the minimum degrees movement).

By strange coincidence this morning I bought a 3 tonne trolley jack from Halfords to change the wheels on my Disco 3. £100 but it looks pretty sturdy and it lifts to full height with one pump of the handle.
