What's the process? The seller doesn't seem to know either. Not sure if I would be allowed to drive on the diplomatic plates while the change in registrations was taking place - does anybody know?

I highly doubt you'd be able to drive on them.

If you do, have fun sailing up the M1 at Vmax!

I should make sure the "seller" is the "owner" before you part with any cash! Is he from the Nigerian embassy?

You don't need to be a diplomat to have diplomatic plates. Ordinary staffers at various intergovernmental institutions also get them - eg ecmwf, ebrd. As for how to change from diplomatic plates to normal ones, no idea.

Taken from another site:

"Iwork at a diplomatic site.

Foreign nationals who work here are entitled to two sets of X plates which must be transferred to another vehicle or returned to HMG if they are no longer required. No VED is paid.

UK nationals do not enjoy those privileges but do escape paying income tax and (optionally) NI like non-UKers.

If you buy a car currently displaying diplomatic plates you will need to re-register it. "
