Finally fed up with the poor build quality, terrible unreliability of my wife's 04 XC90 and thinking of replacing it with a similar vintage Landcruiser 3.0 D4-D GX. I need 7 seats plus 4wd - and, critically, reliability and build quality. What can I expect from the Toyota...? Any thoughts?

Slow but solid motoring in one thirsty indestructible box. What's not to like?

I looked at them not so long ago, they seem to keep their value ridiculously well, even those with high mileages, great if you're selling, not so if you're buying!

This suggests to me they are desirable & built to last - they must be one of the few cars I've never heard a bad word about the reliability of.

When they do go wrong it can be rather expensive. Then again most 4wd's are as there are more things to go wrong. Resale is good though if you change cars often.

The UN use them in every trouble spot around the globe - 'nuff said.

Probably the most reliable 4x4 you can get! Only thing is that they are often driven by members of the 'travelling' community much like a Pajero, etc.

Great cars. Built like tanks. Hold their value stupidly well and go for hundreds upon hundreds of thousands of miles without sweat. They are notorious for being so damn reliable.

Used to have a 4.2TD Lancruiser Amazon in the family. Have nothing but love for those engines and the car. They sound really gruff and like a tank on the road. Miss it so much!

Drove one when I was out in the middle east last year, decent performance, very comfy and seated 7 adults with ease. Great car, took it dune bashing and obviously its very good off road.

There is a reason why they command strong money, there pretty indestructible. They'll almost certainly outlast all of its rivals.

GX is the 90 series up to 2002 ...

LC3/LC4/LC5/Invincible is the 120 series up to 2009 ...

We have had 120s since 2008. Indestructible.

SWMBO has had an older one for a few years now. Drove it for a year with a cracked cylinder head and last week the backbox broke. Still it goes on without trouble.

It's never failed to arrive, nor has it broken down, and she's treated it like st. Still it goes on, towing her horses around the country.

I can't believe how strong the prices are either!

I have spent a lot of time in all variety of Land Cruisers both Armoured and soft skin, they go anywhere always work and you can fix them with a hammer.

They are unbelievably tough! They will outlast their rivals and the only comparable is the Merc G Wagon.

A word of warning they are not a road biased SUV they are a 4x4 from the old school.

Out here in the Middle East they're the car. Crazy residuals but for good reason - they're built like tanks and while not the most sophisticated on the road, they can get you anywhere.

Slow? The D4-d diesels are running 110 mph, not really slow
Thirsty, ? again the D4-d is pretty good, generally 30 mpg, and 32 mpg on a run.
Indestructible, ? they do last rather well, an their middle name is "Reliabile"
Land "Reliable" Cruiser

They're on about Prado's.

Out in the middle east a Landcruiser is a Prado and a Landcruiser Amazon is a Landcruiser.

prados are everywhere because they are dirt cheap and get purchased by the hundred on big contracts

the real land cruiser is the amazon, two fuel tanks and a fridge.
