Just wondering if anyone knows of a website where you can input a postcode (for example your place of work) and how far you would be prepared to travel (say 45min for a commute) and it then gives you a radius of places that are within that distance?

http://property.mapumental.com/ Just like this - but not using public transport (we are PH afterall!)

Cheers!

Pretty sure Microsoft's AutoRoute had the ability to do it.

But that might have been by distance rather than by time.

There is definitely something like this that exists, a friend of mine works in HR and he showed me it once, was something to do with working out the impact of moving an office to a different site and the HR implications of travel time for staff....il see if i can work out what it was, I think it might have been based on Google maps, but im not sure.

HI,
Not sure if this is what you want, but Right Move has the ability to design a search based on a radius from a given postcode... Might not be big enough, but you can also build a custom search on the map.

big_boz - that sounds perfect, let me know if you remember!

Ru78 - cheers, but not quite. Ideally it would be a method that takes into account the relative speeds on which you would travel along the roads at. eg: motorway 65mph average in morning traffic, compared to A-road through town - 25mph.

Leosayer - That looks like it would be exactly what I'm after, but unless I'm being daft I can't see a way for general users to search using IGeolise?

Autoroute 2003 has it - I just checked and I can set speeds for different types of road, then choose the driving time and it draws an outline around the starting point showing how far I would reach in any direction/road.

There is a realy easy way, maps.google.co.uk > get directions > input place of work as A > input random near place as B > drag point B around on map and google will update distance and time. This is how I found my house which had to be less than 30 mins and max hooning roads to work.

I don't know how accurate it is (i.e. it didn't seem quite right when I did a search), but it should give an indication.

GoneAnon - Thanks, if I have to pay for a solution I will do that!

Telomerase - Agreed, but I was after something just a little more automated, which might throw up some places that I hadn't thought of.

MartinQ - in theory that's perfect. As you say though, seems a bit flakey - it's completed a couple of the searches i've done (with some optimistic timings in places, for routes that I know well), but generally anything over 30min it's come back with an error.

If you want to pm me the postcode, time and speed parameters I can do them for you. Then figure out an easier way to save/email the maps than screen print and upload to photobucket.

This is an example of the output based on 45 minutes (70 on motorway, 62 on dual-cs, 40 for major roads, 34 for minor roads, and 19 in town). I'd say it's fairly accurate, though I have to make allowances for the fact that my software predates the new Clackmannan bridge and the upgrading of the A80 at Cumbernauld.
