I'm doing a project in college that involves creating an app that links in with cars. The winner of the project gets a large investment to help make the app a reality.

My idea is to create a device that tracks the car and relays the location to the users' iDevice. Now, I know this has already been done, but there are also some other features that I have thought of, but I need some feedback from you guys to see if this is actually feasible/safe.

The unique features of the app/device are:
- shows the speed of the car (easy to do with GPS data)
- shows how many people are in the car (could be linked to seatbelt sensors in the car)
- can remotely limit the speed of the car to say, 20mph, so that the thief isn't going to make a quick getaway
- can remotely shut down the car when it stops at a red light
- sets off the car alarm remotely (useful if your keys are stolen or you are carjacked)

I know some of these ideas are a bit out there (such as remotely shutting down the car), but I want some opinions on the speed limitation feature. I don't know too much about the inner workings of cars so I want to know if this is actually possible/legal/safe to do.

Any help/guidance is much appreciated. Also, sorry if this is the wrong section.

Dont make it to detailed. Simply shut the car down from your lap top or phone if its nicked! then let the plod do their bit.

The problem with that is the user could cause an accident by shutting the car down in the middle of a motorway or something!

Most new cars are fly by wire on the throttle, if you could cut the power/feed to that you would limit the speed.

I can do that, but I have to be in the car at the time...

Not to rain on your parade, but a simple search on Google has this covered.

One method that includes speed, seat belts, logging etc also has audio volume control so teenagers face fewer distractions.

Let the app control some of these, so they can't get in in the first place:

Better to prevent than cure, right?

On a slightly more serious note: I like the locking-the-scum-inside idea.
