Road tax question

My car tax expired on September 31st, however, I have been working in Brasil for the last 3 months so have been unable to renew it. The car is off the road (Parked in my driveway) and the car is fully insured. I am due home within the next 2 weeks so how will it work when I go to tax it. I am assuming that I will be given a tax disk dated from October, is this correct?
If you remember clearly sending off a hand drawn SORN, then you can buy one from either the beginning of November, or the first of December, whichever is appropriate.
If, however, you let your tax lapse and didnt complete the SORN process, then theres a good chance that an £80 'fine' will land on your doorstep whether you tax it back to October the first or not.
