Really squidgy velour seats in Pugs, and magic carpet ride quality - would be far more useful in this day and age of f
ked up roads and speedhumps. Instead what do we get? 40 profile tyres on even the most banal rep-mobile.
And just how absolutely massive cars were inside compared to modern cars.

Been talking with a friend of mine and we were reminising about the Granada 2.8i Ghia X his dad had.
They were truely luxurious and comfy for the day!!
A mate of mine had one in the mid-80s and yes it was truly luxurious and powerful, fond memories of going and getting back from the Flappers nightclub in Leyton in it. They were truely luxurious and comfy for the day!!

All those dreadful slow dances at the end of the night.

Didn't they do a "Chasseur" version? I remember seeing an Estate version in our local Dealer, when they were new. I think it was even higher specced than the Ghia X.
I was right. Here's a photo of one. That's when brown was the new black. I even think it had fitted luggage!
Back in the 80's the old man had a Volvo 760, his father my grandfather had a 240 GLE, my uncle had a BMW 730 and other uncle had a 2.9 cossie scorpio, all complete with 80's leather.
The 760 was the most comfy, the 240 stank of the pipe my granddad smoked (but i liked it), the BMW was the most opulent and i though the most expensive, but for me the Cossie Granny won out of all of them.
I was 10, the BACK seats were electric (how cool is that!), but mainly it said Cosworth on it!
My uncle with the Beemer found a photo last year and brought it to show the family at a do we had. Big family trip we all took to France in '89 with all the cars parked in a line at the ferry port, happy times

Rarity you say? In the mid-'80s, my Dad had one of these:

It was maroon with an orange velour interior and was so peppered with rust holes it looked like the army had used it for target practice. For some reason the rust would appear in the middle of the panels rather than the edges, and he'd just cut the rust out, weld a plate over the hole and spray over it.
Absolutely no-one knew what it was. I still remember a holiday in Pembrokeshire where three kids with I-Spy books chased after it through the town centre.

No mention of the 18/22, Princess, now that was purely luxury, well from the point of view of a passenger sat in the back, not really ever regarded as a driving sensation but it had very comfy suspension and more leg room than any other car I have been in. depends whether you equate luxury with actual comfort or leather seats, a premium badge and rock hard suspension.
You could get a Wolesley version as well, later on you could get the Ambassador, same thing but with the hatchback they should have sold it with in the first place.
My Austin Ambassador Y reg, Y reg, Yreg
My Austin Ambassador Y reg is a car that I revere
My Austin Ambassador Y reg, Y reg, Y reg
Don’t keep asking me why, Reg
It just happens to be that year
Now you may covet a Clio
Or a Mondeo
Marvel at the Montego
Fine but not me, no
Now you may be utterly sold on
Your Peugeot, your Proton
Your Mitsubishi Shogun
But I’ll always dote on
My Austin Ambassador Y reg, Y reg, Y reg etc.
I’d even say no ter
A Rolls with a chauffeur
A brand new Toyota
A Skoda? Give over!

I was just thinking about 130 Coupes the other day and how nice they are, haven't seen a saloon in many years though.

Mate & I started to hatch a half-arsed plan to set up a 70s car hire company recently. Idea being that we source cars from that era and, er, hire them out. "Ordinary" cars, if you will, not E Types and the like. Must admit that a Granada Ghia was one of the first to spring to mind!
will the Granadas include winkworth gong / two tones and a big pile of empty cardboard boxes ? Twincam16 said:
My Granddad had one in the 70's, before i was born and before he became a volvophile, but i remember seeing pictures of it, it was proper 70's yellow. Did they have some sort of primitive cruise control that clamped the throttle cable at a given opening..have a vague recollection of being told this.....looks very nice thoughGassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
