The thing I noticed last night, were a large number of fkwits driving around, with sidelights and foglights on, but no headlights.

I was going to start a thread about it, but couldn't be arsed.

This is presumably about rear foglights, which is more of a danger than front fog lights as it can mask the brake lights.

Funny how people are always so eager to turn them on, but completely forget about turning them off.

What is wrong with the "Sidelight & Foglight" combination?

Oh, people just love turning their rear foglights on. Even if there's 200 miles of visibility, they see the slightest patch of mist and *BOOM* my eyeballs fall out.

When conditions are marginal I'd rather have drivers use too many lights than too few.

It was very foggy around my was last night - I don't have front fogs, but if I had them I probably would have put them on just so I could be seen a little earlier.

If you're complaining that they are bright or blinding then you need your eyes tested.

Used to annoy me but who really cares anymore? Especially with DRLs now I'm not even sure if they were all fog lights anyway...

ETA: Rear fogs in town are not necessary and yes people should turn them off when they can see others behind them, but most drivers are too busy concentrating on breathing and steering at the same time to worry about that...

Nothing when visibility's less than 100m. Under any other circumstances the driver is a of the highest order.

Was driving home in the worst fog I'd ever driven in the other night, visibility down to maybe 15 metres. It was bad enough that sat at a main A-road junction you couldn't see the lights on the other side of it.

I decided to have a play around with the different lighting combinations and drew the following conclusions:

Side lights + fogs = you could just make out the fogs were on but you couldn't see a thing on the road, dangerous is the only way to describe it

Dipped only = could see the road quite well but quite a bit of refraction due to the thick fog

Dipped + fogs = no difference from above

So in essence front fog lights are rubbish, they do absolutely nothing to aid visibility. (and that's how I've found all my cars that have had them)

Conversely I noticed this morning a lack of people using their foglights.

Visibility was really low on the edge of town yet people were driving around with no lights on. I had my front and rears on with sidelights, until visibility improved, then just switched to headlights only.

Some cars just appeared from nowhere! You couldn't make them out, if one was stationary with no lights on at the speed traffic was going it would've been interesting...

They may not make it easier to see (although I disagree), but they certainly make it easier to be seen which is just as important. I live in an area that is prone to fog, I cannot believe how many people consider their own ability to see to be the key factor when considering what to do in fog. The plod should do more on this issue IMHO.

My name is Hustle Russell and I am a Foglight tt.

Has anybody ever actually been dazzled by foglights? I use my front fog lights not only when visability is below 100ft but also in heavy rain or when there is a lot of standing water. The extra lamps mounted low in the bumper help me to spot puddles and road damage and thus 'read the road' better. I also use them on roads which are in poor condition or covered with dirt for the same reason.
Do I always switch them off for oncoming cars? Not if it will compromise my own driving in any way. If they were bright and angled horizontally or upwards, and thus likely to cause other road users distress, I would- but they aren't so I don't.
It may be illegal and it may make me unpopular but I consider it another tool in my box to help me make safe progress, look after my car and reduce the likelihood of hitting standing water/dirty patches etc etc.
From another fog light rant thread (Hmm... we must've been through this before?)
You can substitute 'tt' for 'knobjockey' for the purposes of this thread...
