Peugeot, can they come back?
Discussion
Looked at a new 208 earlier, that office-sharers What Car have in for review, and I started thinking about how much I used to love the brand. I always liked the 505GTI (I even liked the 504), the glorious 604, the hotter versions of the 405, the hot hatches we all know and love and I even owned a 306 DTurbo for a year or two as well. In short they were a brand I liked and wanted to own.
While I like the look of the RCZ, and this new 208, can they ever get us (the PHer) back in the showroom? Cars like the 1007 put me off a long time ago and I'm wondering if opinions can be changed.
If they ramp the power up in the RCZ I might be tempted....as a used proposition. Tough job ahead I'd say, even with decent new product.

I hope they die a death sooner rather than later...
Along with Renault and Citroen as well.
The French unions only have themselves to blame.
Why? Why do you hope they die a death? Along with Renault and Citroen as well.

What have they done to you?
Strange.
I do not appreciate such obvious laziness and cost cutting in any vehicle and French car's are among the worst offenders
I was a fan of 90's PSA cars but I fell very much out if love with what they started making in the 00's. Styling and handling seemed to go to s
t. I can't get past the styling of the newer citroens, but the newer Pugs are ok in a bland way.
I had 3008 on hire for a week and was very impressed. It was a FWD 1.6 HDI 110 and I think it had the fancy suspension. It actually drove like a Peugeot should, comfortable but good in the corners. I was actually stunned at how well it cornered. The engine was fine for what it was, and it wasn't slow. Only complaint was a bit if a lack of steering feel, but that is typical of so many new cars. I hope that they are getting back on track to making what they used to be good at, affordable every day cars that could still keep a keen driver entertained.

Hopefully it's just their wilderness years, similar to what Ford experienced from the late eighties to the mid to late nineties. Ford recovered with the Mk5 Fiesta and Puma and then later the Mk1 Focus. Peugeot did really well but the last decent car I remember was the GTI-6 before it all started going downhill. It's certainly within their capacity to change and 'do a Ford' but whether or not it'll happen, especially in the current economic climate, is a different matter.
As someone who likes the classic Peugeot's a lot, I hope they can. Sharing platforms with Citroen gives them a huge opportunity to make something interesting - if they can make the 208GTI exciting enough to tempt people back, give it a bit of soul and pizazz to tempt people out of Cooper S' and the likes. The 107 is a great car, and the 508 is a decent effort that is probably doomed to failure thanks to the overwhelming fetish for German barges in that size.
What they need is a C4-alike that has decent handling, looks and a bit of soul.

Can't see why nearly everyone seems to have it in for Peugeot on here, we have had several and they have all been fine...
What have you had WR? Good to hear the other side of the story
I agree Citroens have them beat for styling at the moment though...some very nice cars...
I loved 80's and early 90's Peugeot. They were great looking and great handling cars.
My first car was a 205, whilst at the same time my Dad had a black 405.
Sadly they've become ugly, bloated cars which whilst not doing anything too badly, don't really seem to find a niche in the market. I think the likes of Hyundai and Kia have taken many sales from Peugeot.
I'd love to see Peugeot position themselves as a dynamic sporty brand again, rather than the nowhere land they are at in at the moment.
I think the point Peugeot hit rock bottom was when they released the 1007. Nobody wanted to own a Peugeot and be affiliated with that!

Care to offer a couple of examples?
I've removed engines, rebuilt engines, rebuilt rear axles, and the only really annoying one I can think of is the way the 106/Saxo rear beam has the torx headed torsion bar bolts obscured by the trailing arm at one end.
Never came across anything else where I've really though "That's particularly stupid"
Changing headlamp bulbs on a 206 is awkward to say the least, it needs to be much easier given their propensity to need a new one every few weeks.I've removed engines, rebuilt engines, rebuilt rear axles, and the only really annoying one I can think of is the way the 106/Saxo rear beam has the torx headed torsion bar bolts obscured by the trailing arm at one end.

Have they stopped making the 206+ now?
Monumental sales and production run for an atrocious car. Why bother making anything good?
Wasn't the 206+ destined for junior, expanding markets hence the popularity?Monumental sales and production run for an atrocious car. Why bother making anything good?
They certainly sold them in normal markets such as the Netherlands as well.
