My trusty Mazda 6 is nearing the end of its useful life, so in the next 6 months I'll be looking for a tow car of some sort, but I'm starting to think I'm looking for the holy grail as I can't find anything which really ticks all the boxes.

This time I want something a bit bigger which can not only tow my kit car to the track and get all the tools/tyres in the back, but can occasionally tow my other cars (~1500kg + trailer) occasionally. It will have to tow to the Nurburgring so reliability, comfort and not too thirsty are important. Ideally the back will be big enough to take the equivalent load of my Mazda but without folding the seats down - this would enable me to take wife + child to the track as well which might make more days possible.

Requirements are:
£10k budget
Max 60k miles on clock
Must be capable of towing 2500kgs on occasion (around 1000kgs regularly)
Must not be struggling to tow with cruise set to 70mph (where laws allow)
Around 30mpg towing would be nice
Reliable
Comfortable
Large load space without folding seats

I was looking at something like a pathfinder, but hesitant with reports of poor handling...does anyone have real experience?

Toyota land cruiser or a land rover discovery are both good options. A Mitsubishi L200 might be worth considering too.

That's a hefty weight to pull. It's got disco 3 written all over it but 10k will get you over the 100,000 mile stuff.

I'm curious, where will you be legally alowed to tow at 70mph?

Aside from the law, however, where will you safely be able to tow at 70mph other than an enormous runway. At that speed the damn thing will fishtail all over the place and be lethal.

For your budget you should get a good low mileage Landcruiser which can tow 2800kg. Something for towing those kind of weights isn't going to give stunning fuel consumption so you can rule out an ordinary car.

Toyota surf 3rd gen with all the bells and whistles, that would leave you money spare for your track car!

Possibly not the obvious choice but the Jap big MPV's would be ideal, eg the 3.0 TD Toyota Granvia/Regius or the Nissan Elgrand. Usuallythe imports don't have plated train weights (which can be handy come VOSA check time) but they all all tow 2500kgs with ease.

The in laws have got a massive twin axle caravan, they have a Kia Sorento 170BHP Diesel, It tows it with zero effort and still returns 30 ish while towing.

Plasticy as hell inside, but pretty comfy, and drives a lot better than the P38 RR that i used to run.

No Not a PH car, but will comfortably do what you want it to.

This might be a consideration - not looking for a "PH" car - this is purely functional....

Fishtail, or snake isn't caused by speed.
