If the tyre is approve for EU use the indicators are at 1.6mm.

They're probably raised to the same level as last November's TWI thread

Just get a tread depth gauge and you'll know for sure.

If the tyre is at the stage when you have to ask if its near enough to the wear bar it might be a good time to change them, they are the only contact with the road and should be paramount priority, winter around the corner aswell.

The tread is above the bar indicator by 1-2mm so if the bar is at 1.6mm I might want to change soon, but if it's at 3mm then I won't.

A mate had a depth gauge and just checked, the rears are on just over 4mm so plenty left. I'm surprised as they've done 17k miles now, the fronts have even more!

Why, isn't it only us that has 1.6mm regs ?

No disrespect but he didn't ask anything of the sort.

Anyway, 1.6 - 2mm according to Continental.

AFAIK it's because tyres are generally a single spec across the EU and they can't be "underselling" to the UK market.

I have nothing to back up the original statement, just something I was told on a training course when working for a large tyre retailer.

I've probably measured over 5000 tyres in my life and don't ever remember measuring a tyre that was properly flush with the wear indicators with greater tread depth than the legal limit. Sometimes the tread is "touching" the wear marker around 2mm, but not flush.

Sorry. My bad, I think I slipped into over reaction mode.

Yes.

I think the wear indicators are typically at 2mm.

Fact is, you need about 3 mm of tread for decent tyre perfomance so if you're anywhere near the indicators it's time for a change!
