Hello,

Looking to get new tyres as my car came with 2 Pirelli's, a Kumho and a Mohawk yikes

Thing is, both Pirellis are on the left of the car and the other two tyres on the right side.

Would I be able to take the front wheel from the left side and fit it to the rear right wheel? The tyres are asymmetrical as far as I can tell...thing is I don't want to have to buy four new tyres when two of them are perfectly fine and have 6mm+ of tread on them.

Worried I'm asking a stupid question here...

The tyres should say on the wall if they're direction or sided (some are one or the other or both).

What tyres have 6 mm on them?

Many assymetric tyres are marked 'Inside' and 'outside', so they aren't directional. OP, you need to check your Pirellis for markings on the outer sidewall. If direction arrow, you shouldn't put them on the other side. If they say 'Outside', you can.

They all do approximately but I'm going to throw away the two non Pirellis.

I have Pirelli on and mine can go anywhere, so if yours the same, put them on the front and get a nice new pair of Pirelli on the back.

WHY ?

I always put the new tyres on the front, even in RWD cars my mad idea is new tyre with new grip is at the end that does the steering and most of the stopping

I guess BRAKE will tell me soon I am going to kill a child or something

well keep your child out of the road

Fleckers, let's keep that debate here:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I put tyres on whichever end needs them personally, but if I bought a S/H car with old Pirellis I'd put them on the front just to use them up so I could have four new ones...

Op has RWD I have 3 RWD its best not to loose the rear end !!!!! It's also means a lot more fun can be had smile. If it was FWD yes I agree stuff the new on the front because you have less chance of loosing it and hanging on as you watch a tree approach !

As far as I know, all the tyre makers advise putting the tyres with the better water clearing properties (typically the newer ones) on the back because the front wheels aquaplaning is far easier to recover from than the rears. I'd always put new tyres on the rear regardless of which wheels are driven. Nothing to do with normal grip levels, just water displacement.

Well, what I actually do if I can is rotate the tyres regularly and replace all four at once. smile

In the OP's situation though, it probably doesn't matter much 6mm of tread isn't that far off new tread depth anyway.
