After spending a couple of hours of a hard-earned weekend outside washing my car, in spitting rain, when I had 101 other things I could be doing, I started to think - what makes some people get so attached to their cars?

I've changed cars almost every 18 months but every one has been "special". Other people give their cars names, detail them religiously, spend thousands modding them when they could just as easily sell up and buy another car which does the same job straight out of the box - all because we grow strangely and uniquely attached to them.

Is it because we spend so much time in them? We don't get so attached to mobiles, or anything else we spend most of our regular time with. Most people don't give their houses names. And we keep our fridges and other white goods for years (probably longer than a car at least) but I doubt that many people develop an emotional attachment to them.

It would be interesting to see what other people think of this - for me, each car I've owned has heralded a certain type of 'opportunity' - that "what if" which could be made possible thanks to my old 1.4 Civic etc.

IMO it's because we have 'emotional' experiences in them.

Think back to that drive where you got to you destination and thought "feck me, I'm turning round and doing that again"
