I've been driving a friends (fwd) car all weekend and it's noticeably jerky coming on and off the throttle, the clutch doesn't seem to be slipping, it feels like riding a bike with a slack chain. What is the likely cause, and us there anything that can be done to sort it?

My 106 does this, fairly sure its an engine/gearbox mount but haven't diagnosed it yet.

Does the gearstick move around a lot as well? If so odds on it's an engine or gearbox mount. Assuming it hasn't got millions of miles on it.

engine mounts, slop in the diff/box... or just erratic use of the go pedal?

I'm going with gearbox/engine mounts, and how dare you question my driving skills.

If it's a VW, then definitely 100% engine mounts.

A faulty coil pack can produce these symptoms also.

Is that the same for the rear brakes that need readjusted every three weeks?

Didn't question anyone's driving skills. Erratic use of the go pedal my post said? Some of the worlds best drivers have erratic use of the gas. Rally drivers for one.

If you took the view that it was questioning your driving skills you have misunderstood.

View it as throttle techniqe.

Friends of mine with all makes and model of cars and powers have this all or nothing use of the go pedal. Doesn't mean they have low driving skills either.

OK, I'll re-phrase: how dare you question my throttle technique.
