What do people think about the quality of supermarket own brand oil? I recently bought some fully synthetic oil from Asda and the price and spec were very good but can you really trust it is fully up to spec or would it be suicide for them to claim a level of quality that it didn't meet?

For the extra few quid I would opt for a branded oil every time. Peace of mind an all that...

I'm sure supermarket oil is fine in your old Mini but personally I wouldn't recommend it for your Lamborghini.

I may be old-fashioned but I see decent oil as cheap engine insurance!

In theory it meets the same standards as other mainstream oils.
Would I use it?

Supermarket oil is made by big brand names (e.g. Comma) and repackaged. If it meets the manufacturers specifications it will work. The same thing is done by Halfords, except their repackaged oil costs a fortune.

So do I, but I'm wondering what evidence you have that supermarket oils are not decent?

My car has developed a drink problem so I've been using Tesco Fully Synthetic for the last 18 months. As it burns it fast I'm not worried about the lack of quality compared to Castrol.

Mind you the price advantage is starting to evaporate. The last 4l bottle (bought in April) was £15 a few weeks ago it was £16 now I need a some more the price is £20 mad. I've been to three different stores on the off chance the local shop was an anomaly.
