Quick question guys...

There was a time when if you failed the MOT, you could go away and get the car repaired and retested for free.

Then 2-3 years ago, I seem to recall if you failed a MOT, if you took it elsewhere you had to pay a Retest fee...irrespective of what it failed on.

Has the rule changed back to what it was before?

So for example if you failed on suspension - could you go elsewhere get it fixed and return to the MOT test station and get a free retest?

I believe this is now down to the garage who does the MOT. Some i know of will charge a retest fee some don't... There is a time dependency too..

There's a list of things that qualify for a free re-test within a certain time limit (next working day, I think). Search on VOSA for the details.

The place I take our cars will retest for free if it's within 14 days. No idea what's legally required, though.

Damn frown

There is a problem with my mates suspension which I was going to fix for him over the weekend - but his MOT is on Saturday...

I thought take it down and if it passes great (still do the work) or if it fails (which I think it will) then do the work and take it back for a free retest the following weekend.

Had exactly this with the wife's Octavia and they didn't charge. You'll have to ask the garage.

Failed MOT last Saturday, at a nation wide service centre chain with :-

001 Offside front lower Suspension arm has excessive play in a bush/pin [2.4.G.2]

If this vehicle is left at the testing station for repair and is retested before the end of 10 working days, then only a partial retest is needed for which no fee may be charged.

I've done 28,000 miles, and detected absolutely so signs or feel of a worn suspension bush. It's usually the other way around, I suspect one has gone, and get it checked by the garage. The recepionist informed me that only a complete arm is avaliable, and it would be £200 plus fitting plus VAT. Which was supicious, because this same garage had, in the past, fitted front suspension joints to an earlier version of my car, at nowhere near that cost. A quick internet search revealed complete arms avaliable for circa £50, and outboard joints for £18.99. Re-vist to the garage again next Saturday for a 'discussion' I think.

One thing I decided a long time ago is that I would NEVER get an MoT testing centre to fix a problem that they find.

It depends whats printed on the certificate, as to if the garage can charge a retest fee.

I had a simular thing to that when I had my MR2, they said the front calipers were shot (wanted to charge me £1200) and the handbrake didnt work. Told them to do one as the car drove fine on the way in and I lived on a very steep hill at the time so handbreak was fine!

Took it to another garage and it passed without fault.
