I wouldnt bother spending £10k just to try out the Ring.

Get a decent E36 328i and enjoy. Will be comfortable for the journey and fun on the ring.

Make sure you are very clear on insurance. Its a major consideration these days.

renting would be a option, only problem I see with it is that it's like renting property, dead money. I would rather own it and have the option of selling again after I've had my fill on it.

am I right in saying that there are specialist insurers for just such a thing?

MX5??

Get a decent Mk1 with a turbo/supercharger kit on it and decent suspension, should be able to get one for £4k ish, lots of fun, very forgiving then just enjoy.

yes I've never used them personally but looking at R4R's prices for one of their Swift's vs what the costs were for taking my own car earlier this year it's a no brainer for someone wanting to learn the 'Ring surely?

For first time, rent and get an instructor. Build it up from there.

10k to throw away on a car you might just crash into a wall on the first corner?

How about a £500 stter off ebay. Be more realistic ffs.

Rubbish. 10K on a sorted car is the correct way to do the ring, 500 quid on an ebay snotter that will most likely drop fluids all over the place is a retarded idea, sorry.

Oh and, FFS.

Nick, I'll assume that you haven't lapped it before, in which case you should certainly rent a car for your first trip to see how you get on, believe it or not, it isn't 'everyone's' cup of tea. I'd recommend rent4ring, they have a good selection of cars and are very helpful with first timers. Ask for Dale (he's the round one).

If after that you have caught the bug, then start looking at your own car for the ring. As someone has already said, an E36 328i or M3 is a cracking toy for the ring and with your budget you should be able to get something with a decent set up, and most importantly, a decent cage thumbup

As mentioned I would either go one of 2 ways:

- Hire a car (had friends do it, easy and simple to do. Anything from a Swift to a GT3)

- Spend £2-3k on an Mx5, 328i or similar and have the best day you'll have all year.

Another idiot with more money than sense.

Go ahead, spend £10k on a car to rag around a track you've never driven on with drivers who are far more experienced than yourself.

Excellent company.

Renting 'may' be considered dead money, but you get a great car, well looked after, plus someone to sit in with you if you want.

If you buy a car, with the express purpose of using it at the Ring, then be very very aware of the insurance obligations.
Its a topic that has been done to death, so here's the basics.
Most Insurers now specifically exclude the Ring, some go so far as to exclude the surrounding roads too.
Should you have an accident, it is very, very, very, very expensive. Once you take into account barrier damage, clean ups, other veh damage, personal injury, helimed costs, closure costs.
Your insurers will be obliged to cover third party costs, regardless of how they try to wriggle, but they will then be very likely to chase you for their costs.

I used to live out there, and did a lot of laps on my bike.
They specifically state that their insurance does not cover damage to armco\track closing etc and that you as the driver will still be liable for these costs. So other than not crashing your own car, I don't see how it works out any better than having your own insurance (a policy which includes the ring, obviously).

And just like renting/buying property, buying carries with it a great deal more liability. £10k on a mystery 2nd hand car, or some flight tickets, a R4R car and less liability. Plus, the car will be well sorted, it'll be on the right tyres and it'll be safer.
