That must have been painful...

Looks like there was a driver:steering wheel interface - wonder why the airbag didn't deploy?

Could it be that the airbag failed due to age? I seem to recall reading years ago that airbags had a shelf life... wonder if that is still the case?

Not the airbag, but the pyro that fires it.
That's not easily replaced I'm guessing? Bit disconcerting to think the airbags might not work in my car if I were to have an accident. More reason to not crash I guess.
Having had a quick look around online, some manufacturers recommend replacing the airbags after 10-15 years, other (like Volvo) say the airbag is meant to last the lifetime of the car (by which they also probably mean 10-15 years

is that really repairable, or worth the money asked?
Can't see why it wouldn't be repairable. A pillars look intact, so hopefully no serious chassis distortion. Good ones sell for over £100k, so plenty of leeway.Edit: looking at this photo however, the left suspension strut has been pushed way back. Can that succesfully/ safely be jigged back, or is new chassis time?

Ouch. That is a damn shame.
I doubt the airbags would have failed in that time. The car would only be 11 years old, and although the shelf life of airbags is typically 10 years there are plenty of examples of cars far older that have still fired successfully.
It looks like a proper frontal impact though, so I can't imagine it wouldn't have triggered the system.
Given the rest of the rather nasty vandalism, perhaps someone rammed it with a truck or let it roll down a hill into something while it was parked up??

I thought of that, but the steering wheel looks a bit distorted as if it had been gripped. Maybe it the pic.I doubt the airbags would have failed in that time. Its a very one sided impact though, is it possible that it didn't go off as it was so far over to the right, and perhaps span the car?
Perhaps, but that's at least as much coverage as you'd get from an NCAP test. Most vehicles will even fire if the main crash beams have been missed. I was under the impression that frontal accidents where the airbags haven't fired were in old tech stuff where the car was sliding and didn't make a direct head on impact.
As much a i like the Z8 and know good ones fetch £100k+...£28k for this is taking the pee pee.
Its not worth more than £10k IMO. And that will be for parts as it will never be worth much having had such a shunt.
Some little scrote has run home with his chav mates bragging about the "M gear knob i just blagged from a wrecked Z3".

Lovely car and interior. Wish I got one a few years back while they only cost £50k.
