So just put a deposit on an '02 2grand transit so I can lug stuff form IDY shed to home and home to tip and called round for insurance...

They want around 400 quid (with 8 years NCB) for me and the wife - two clean drivers - for 2000 miles of 'social use'...

That's the same ballpark as My Focus ST and BMW 550 Touring!!!! It's a 2grand Transit!!

Anyone got any ideas of sensible or specialist VAN insures to approach?...Direct line and Admiral done and Churchill next but aren't picing up the phone...

I think you'll get a second shock when you try taking it to the tip.

Yes, van insurance is expensive. I pay more on a Transit Connect that I did on a 328i Beemer.

Having recently contemplated a pick up along the lines of an L200 Warrior, i found that my "car" NCD was not applicable to a commercial vehicul, so i would have to start with no NCD. I found one company that would take it, but they were much more expensive so almost pointless.

Does that £400 actually take your NCD into account?

I had this about 3 years back. We were doing a self build and bought a Transit tipper van (best thing I could have done at the time, saved me a fortune and got more for it after 18months use!)

Phoned around for insurance and every time I said it was for personal use and not for commuting, business etc they wouldn't have it and kept saying - so how many miles will you do for work with the van!!
Think in the end I had to bite the bullet and paid about £400.

On the tip front, my local council required my log book, utility bill and a letter I think which in return for I got 18 'vouchers' that entitled me to go to the local tip. The garbage nazis just take a voucher each visit. It also wasn't allowed to be sign written which mine wasn't.

Covered the tip already...they're happy with it as long as i don't take the P...

I'd understand it if it were for commercial business and I was delivering radioactive waste or pallets full of diamonds, but it's a run around for me and a load of plasterboard...

Hardly high risk...my quote for a Full Fat Range Rover Supercharged was not much more and guess which i'd rather have bought! Shame you can't get 8x4 sheets in the boot of a RR...

My work hack is a 1998 Renault Kangoo. With 6 years NCB it is about 400 quid.

My Jag XJR will be 240 come renewal.

Yeah - £381 with 8years NCD or £718 with it 'Mirrored' from my other policy...or £430 with Direct line with NCB and £800 without...

Yeah - I have to fill out a form detailing what the waste is and who I am and present it to them. No actual limit though.

Unless it's a hire van hired for less than a week...then you don't need a form at all!

...so if they get funny with me I'll just be painting 'Dave's Hire vans' on the side pretty quick...

To be fair my Council so far are pretty damned good with everything I've had to speak to them about.

Insure it as a Transit campervan (Flux will cover it)....should be much cheaper.

I Had the same when I bought a peugeot partner for my mountain biking, it cost more to insure than for my brand new TT. I sold it and bought a Renault Kangoo, the car one with seats, folded them down so it does the same job and now pay under £200.

Far cheaper tax too as it's not a van. Same engine and same body!

One of the reasons I got rid of my trusty Peugeot Expert - ridiculous insurance cost for a low mileage vehicle that was never used in connection with any business. You also suffer when trying to transfer your no claims bonus, even if it's only ever been used as a private vehicle a lot of companies won't recognise it.

That's expensive... but I suppose you forgot to mention that you are a self employed builder and need "carriage of own goods".

That should sort the price out once you've fixed the error wink

Think I used Tesco when I had my Vivaro. It was around £330 back in 2007 for 10,000 miles per year (SDP and commuting). They let me transfer my car NCB over too.

I suspect you're not going to get it for much less than your quotes so far.

Actually - Adrian Flux £380 no NCB needed...but can transfer it to keep it runnng (as the van's replacing a car eventually) and I might get a discount as and when I do...down to £330...still more than it should be but it's down to a level I can accept....

All reminds me of when I was a teenager insuring cars...insurance cost as much as the car did (or more)...crazy times!

should have bought an estate or people carrier... almost as much carrying space in a galaxy with the benefit of better fuel economy and full set of seats and much quieter/comfortable to drive!

get a people carrier eg citroen picasso - much cheaper to buy and insure and you can get it in the tip (they will reject any kind of van).

Pretty sure you would need to change its class to motorcaravan with the DVLA. Dont think it takes much, you would need to fit cooking or washing facilities though, so gas BBQ screwed to the floor.

Espace doesn't give load capacity I need...need to get loads of 8x4 sheets in it.

Transit is insured at a 'van' not as a camper, so all ok.

Adrian Flux were the winners here...normal van...Domestic use...limited miles (3000) and flexible on the NCB - they will honor it (so keep the 'car' NCB running ) but don't 'need it' to make the policy sensible...

Very happy.
