Any opinions? Our 23 year old lad is looking for something that is reasonable fun and cheap to buy / run. 1.8 seems reasonably quick, low insurance and decent looking.

I quite like the look of them and they have a decent interior. What is he used to? If he has only had a saxo/106/nothing before then it will be a nice car for him IMO.

Thanks for that. Are you 23 though?
What would you recommend in a similar insurance group, (12 tops), must be 4 seater and under £1500?

interior is not nice, seats look good but aren't especially comfortable, dash looks like it belongs in a Vivaro.

Ok cars to be honest, I had one and was never to keen on it but it really was not a bad car overall, little room in the back as the roofline is quite low, a nice looking car and cheap to buy and run as mainly astra G parts. Go for it. just don't customize it, they look st with a body kit.

Currently using the wife old Punto 1.9d had a ZR105 prior to that, died due to HGF and his cronic neglect. Astra would be white goods style and survive his lack of care i would think.

I had a 2001 2.2 version for a year. It looked ok IMO, and the black heated leather interior wasnt too bad either. Just watch out for parts being more expensive just because its the coupe, it was cheaper to fit an aftermarket stainless exhaust than a mild steel standard one !

Do you mean a pattern one or O.E. standard? Lots of cars it's cheaper to buy stainless than O.E.

Yep good cars,

1.8's take abuse !!
I had mine at 17 with a few mods on it and every journey it was taken to the redline even to the shops hehe

Did 3 trackdays in it aswell as leading various hoons. Steering isn't very informative but hey.
The heated leather is pretty plush, supportive yet fairly comfy.

Fairly large boot and such an easy car to work on your self and there's so much room everywhere. Any questions please PM me.

I'd avoid the 2.2's now though. The timing chain stretches and costs two fortunes to fix. Quite a common fault.

On paper the 2.2 is not much quicker. Being so young insurance is all though. Plenty of 2.2 for around the same price. Are they worth the insurance premium?
Aftermarket fart pipe i suspect would be seen as a bonus as young un.

I have to admit i quite like the look of them, wife had an Astra 1,7d of similar vintage which drove surprisingly well, despite being so bland it got lost every time it was parked.

I think parts were more expensive because the coupe design and construction was by Bertone in Italy. Always thought they looked like nice cars but they never did great in reviews. I loved driving them on Metropolis Street Racer on my Sega Dreamcast when I was younger

Yes sorry cheaper than O.E , the car was quite new and low mileage so I just used to take it to the local vauxhall garage to keep the history folder looking good.

If it was anything like my Cavalier SRi i had around the similar age the OEM was exactly the same as the regular system except the end trim. Near double money for a bit of tin wrapped round the end.

It was a smooth enough engine but I dont think you could justify a larger insurance primium for the minimal gain in performance over the 1.8.
