One of my cars came with a really st cherished reg attached (a N.I. number) and I've come to the conclusion that I'd prefer it to return to its original correctly-dated plate.

All the docs I see on the DVLA site talk about retaining a cherished plate, but all I want to do is remove it and don't want to pay any retention fees.

Is there an easy/cheap way to do this?

Presume you could shell out the fee to put it on retention, then let it lapse.

Take the paperwork to your nearest DVLA office and just ask them to issue it with a normal age related plate.

Dead easy, just write a letter saying you no longer want the plate thats on the car and send it or preferably take it into the dvla with your v5 and tax disc and they will re-register it on its original plate f.o.c

Thats why I was asking is he is sure the car isnt originally from NI. If so then this isnt an option. He would then need to buy an age related cherished plate to put onto the car.

That's exactly what I did a while back.
I had an '88 BMW E24 on a naff Irish plate.
Went in to my local DVLA office and they managed to assign back the original plate there and then, after a quick check that it was still available.
I also had to sign something saying that I had agreed to losing the Irish plate forever.

Definitely not - it was bought by the previous owner as it somewhat resembled part of their name...searching the pile of docs I can see the original GB reg...

the plate is SIB 4638, if anyone seriously wants it then PM me...

You might want to see what regtransfers etc will offer or put it on ebay. SIB seem to be worth a couple of quid http://www.regtransfers.co.uk/main/searchs/searchr...

Today, you'll get the original plate back on the car - the plate it's issued with is non-transferable.

I don't know when the DVLA started doing this, so it might not be the case with yours (maybe the original plate was put on something else years back) but why the DVLA didnt always do this is a bit odd, IMO.

Are you sure? I bought one of my cars from Belfast; when it came to registering it with the DVLA (DVLNI in Northern Ireland is a distinctly different department) I merely stated that I wasn't bothered about registering a GB plate in its place. The documentation suggested it was optional to request a GB plate at the point of import registration - not afterwards.

On plate changes, my father had a plate changed on his car a couple of years back. The plate's 3 letter portion was 'BNP', and the meatheaded local cromags couldn't understand it was just a random issue of letters and not a political statement. After the car was egged a couple of times, it was changed without any fee by the DVLA after the problem was explained...

I had SIB 8292 on an old 911 & a SImon Brown offered to buy it off me, couldn't be arsed though & just sold it with the car.

Put it on retention, fire it on eBay with a start price of whatever the retention fee is these days (105 quid?) & see if you get a tickle.

Or give it back to the dvla.

I'd probably just give it away actually.

Sell it. You'd be surprised what people would buy on eBay. Postage is easy too - it's just a piece of paper at the end of the day. However isn't there a fee associated with changing the owner?

My cheapy G3RRD is currently on a retention certificate and due to expire in January 2013.
I was going to simply let it lapse because I am fed up of the costs involved.

So you think EBay is a viable option...Maybe worth a puntscratchchin
