hi all
Yet another What Car thread.

I'm trying to find a 7 seat car that isn't either a 4WD or going to leave me brain dead.

wife wants a Volvo xc90 but they seem old, slow inefficient.

I'm looking at around 30K, want some speed but not sub 20mpg.

I can only think of one car that fits the bill - facelift Mercedes E350CDI Estate with 7 seat option. 265 hp 450 ft lbs of torque.

What else is there? Anyone made the same choice got any opinions?

Spent some time on this question with the same anti-SUV mindset. Ended up with an X5.

The Xc90 engines are gutless and thirsty There's also the whole lugging a 4WD system around that will almost never be used.

l Should add l live In London but have a place in Devon and parents in Lakes so spend most time on the motorway or in the city.

Not sure on the hate for an SUV with someone with these requirements?

Most premium SUV's can be spec'd with a good engine and often 'saloon' like handling.

XC90 and Disco both can have 7 seats and a V8 for example.

Do you want a real 7 seater or an estate with a couple of seats in the back? putting a couple of sprogs in the boot seems like a bad idea to me. Isn't the boot a crumple zone?

A Ford Galaxy with top end engine and the doubleclutch auto thingy drives better than many 4x4s. It's never going to beat off anything special, and its front wheel drive, but they're popular with minicabists for a reason.

For 30k, with 20mpg acceptable, how about a Landcruiser? Big solid with low depreciation anyone?

Discovery 4, HSE spec. You will get an early 59 plate for just under £30k if you look.
Discovery 3, HSE spec ones are under 30k for a last of the line example.

I have a Disco3 and it's great, used the 7 seats for the first time last night.

Pull lever in boot to unfold seat, push button to flip up headrest, open rear door, back seat has lever at top to pull down to half fold seat and pull handle at base to flip full seat forwards, slide a plastic tray forwards to flip out the 3rd row seat base. Takes seconds to do.

Superb on motorway's, auto box is great around town, the D4 can be remapped but with 245bhp and 442lb ft of torque as standard.
D3 has 188bhp and 315lb, can be remapped to 240bhp for £400.

S-Max 2.5T should fit the bill. Honestly, try one. They're really rather good.

Tbh, when it comes to 7 seats you're either looking at an SUV or an MPV - which do you think is worse?

If you really want a left field 7 seater, have you ever considered something like this?
