My friend has just done this to his 2 week old tyre, and wants to know if it is safe or needs replacing? I haven't seen it in person but it looks like quite a chunk from the picture?

I don't think it would pass an MOT like that. Better to replace and be safe, than sorry

Hard to tell how deep it is, but it looks like it's just a rim protector that's been taken off to me?

Yes and no, you cant see any of the white cords showing so its not right into the structure of the tyre but the small cut under the letter B will allow water into the structure of the tyre which will cause problems. I personally would replace as the tyres are the only contact with road so no chancess should be taken, you get little chips fixed in your windscreen fixed so why skimp with tyres.

Meh, unless he is planning on doing high speed runs down the motorway just keep an eye on it, wouldnt bother me aslong as it held air and didnt get any worse.

Also tell him to learn how to drive smile

I'd go with this. I'd not fail it at work.
If you can see metal strands, replace.

Looks like its just a bit off the rim protector.Thats what its there for so you take a piece out of that and not your wheel.Difficult to see exactly how bad it is from the picture but it should be fine.

My view of that would be now that part of the tyre now has no rim protection, and this fella has got previous for driving into kerbs.

ETA - looking at the picture again, he's got a lot of previous for driving into kerbs.

I would say that is cosmetic.

I would remove and advertise it on eBay as MINT tyre for sale.

Not sure about the tyre. What kind of car? TT, A3, Lupo? If it has got ESP then perhaps leave it on. I think he should think about getting some paint on that rim as well before the winter salts really mess it up.

Thanks for the replies.

It's the first time he's curbed the wheel actually, sadly the same can't be said for the previous owner!

I'll get him to keep an eye on it and see if any bulges appear.

It'll be his bulging eyeballs wrestling with the steering wheel, while spinning 360' on the M4.

No, that only happens when you are towing a horsebox with a cortina smile

Jesus there is some massive over-reaction going on here. I would use that tyre indefinitely in exactly the same way I would've before a bit of the rim protector got shaved off.

Looks ok to me. Sidewall is ok as is the contact patch. The wheel looks awful though!

Looks worse than it is, fine to use. Just a bit out of the rim protector
