The car is due a service in a few weeks and, whilst going through old invoices, I have noticed I have gone from using OW/30 engine oil in 2007 to 5W/30 engine oil in 2009 & 2011.

Not too sure how this has happened but I imagine I probably followed the advice given by the salesman at the motorfactors (ECP, GSF) I used at the time of purchasing the oil.

Question is, am I using the correct engine oil?

As the car is due a service in the next few weeks now would be a good time to rectify this if the oil currently being used, 5W/30 is in-correct.

BTW, the car is a VW Golf MK4 1.8T GTi which is on a long life (every 2yrs) service regime.

The cold viscosity is the 0/5 number; notionally a 0 weight oil will provide protection in a cold start a bit quicker than a 5 weight number, but unless the engine is particularly sensitive to oil weight I would think that the attention you've paid to oil changes will more than make up for it.

Thank you both for putting my mind at ease. smile

I just nipped into the garage and looked at the old oil containers.

The car is on a 2001 plate and has been regularly serviced every 2yrs.

The first 4 yrs (2003 & 2005) was via the VW dealer who used 0W/30 oil.

The first non-VW dealer service was in 2007 and 0W/30 oil was still used but in 2009 & 2011 this switched to 5W/30.

As an aside, is the left over oil from the last service a couple of years ago OK to use?

(I'd imagine the really old 0W/30 oil should be carefully disposed off as it's probably past it's shelf life).
