Having accidentally bought a winter barge with RWD, (I was looking at FWD or 4x4, but got carried away with an old merc!) I thought I might invest in some snowsocks. I notice Halfords stock some, and looking on the web there does seem to be a few brands about at varying price points.

Would anyone have any personal recommendations regarding the relative merits of the various brands?

Autoexpress compared snow tyres, chains, socks and spray recently. They said that socks "proved a match for the winter tyres in our traction tests." Not sure if it helps you, but the brand they tested was AutoSock ( http://www.roofbox.co.uk/car-snow-socks/).

Unless you have somewhere safe to take them off again after getting out of the bad bit, I would be wary of using them. This country does not seem to be sympathetic to being held up by what they consider an idiosyncrasy.

Turning and braking tend to require forward motion in the first place laugh
