My eldest has his first lesson next Saturday, am trying to come up with tips I can give him on driving that may help him avoid having to learn the hard way.

I was thinking along the lines of,

Winding windows down to get a better view of the road when it is wet or misty, to also get additional audible information.

Sometimes a dry road can be slippier than a wet one, I reminded myself of that one yesterday, looked dry but it was cold and greasy.

You dont have any alcohol and drive, ever, not a drop, if you do drink significant volume in he evening, you do not drive the following day.

Just because you have been round a bend a thousand times before and it has been clear, if you cant see, history is no guarantee that there wont be a truck parked round the other side.

Get caught speeding, thats it, game over.

Do not emulate any of the stupid stuff you have seen me do over the years, I am not a good example.

If you are driving the car, you are responsible for it, not your dad, check the tyres, if it doesnt feel right, stop.

An oil light is not a suggestion that at some point before Christmas the engine may like a drink, it means stop, it means you have failed in maintaining your vehicle, it should never happen.

The car is not a racing car, you are not a racing driver, it is your mums shopping hatchback that you borrow, if you break it, abuse it or crash it get used to walking. No it wont do a burnout, the handbrake is for holding it when stationary.

Your mobile phone goes in the boot, not in your hand, you do not call on it, you do not text or play Angry Birds whilst driving, non negoitiable.

It is a car, not a dustbin, if you go to Subway or some other fast food outlet I should never know, if I find debris like that, dont expect to use it for a week. Get ketchup or whatever on the seats, get it cleaned before I find out.

The car runs on petrol, this costs money, please fill the car up.

No, you dont need to overtake anything.

Sounds facetious, but have your first crash early on.

Do not aim for the apex on a right hand blind bend.

Never utter the phrase 'watch this'. It can only end badly.

Just want to get the ground rules written down, want to save him having to work some stuff out for himself, so he knows where he stands, potentially avoiding death or injury but also expense and losing use of the car, I don't think I was taught all that well, very little in the way of any advice above the bare minimum, think they need to realise what a big deal it is, girl at work just wrecked her car, a 2 litre Hyundai coupe by going to fast in the wet with a bald tyre, speaking to he scares me, she hasn't a clue and is lucky to be alive really, want my three to be better informed and knowledgeable, i want the potential problems and consequences in black and white as when you are new to something it is easy to get caught out and. It realise the impact something can have and how long it takes to get rid of that burden, I.e. five years a bump stays on your insurance and is it three for points on your license.

Never presume that because another driver has their indicator on that they actually intend to turn. And vise versa.

Absolutely not this. Don't turn him into another sheep that sits with the rest of the flock behind OAPs doing 35mph in NSLs. Teach him how to overtake safely.

Having passed your test does NOT mean you CAN drive.
I just means you're allowed to.

The more white paint there is on the road, the more hazardous the area, even down to the dashing of the centre lines.

Turning off the engine to save fuel by coasting is a stupid idea. But not as stupid as removing the keys from the ignition while you're doing so.

Before you fill up with fuel, check you've got the correct fuel hose.
Then check again.

Don't expect other road users to do anything, give yourself time to react to what they actually do, not what you think they will do.

treat every other road user as an idiot and never take anything for granted.

If you ve got be somewhere for 11am and its half hour away, dont leave at half 10. always allow extra time so your not clock watching instead of concerntrating on the road.

Many times ive explained this time thing to the step daughter but she still prefers to keep people waitin because she didnt allow for traffic hold ups. But then moaned when me and Mrs400 had already sat down and ordered our meal, due to the fact table was booked for 7pm she arrived at 720ish.

Has she learned her lesson i doubt it.

Blind spot every time. Look twice at junctions. Bikers. Kill one of them and you lose 25 points and don't get to drive the car for a week.
