What's the best way of treating them?

Clay barring is most effective if rust specks are on the surface, followed by a good waxing

Is it the bodywork rusting or specks of iron fallout stuck on the paint? If it is the latter an iron fallout dissolver like Iron-x will do the job.

Give the car a thorough wash then treat the entire thing with Iron X, leave it for about 5 minutes and the car will start 'bleeding' purple everywhere as the rust dissolves, it's also amazing for wheels.

Use gloves though because it's one of the foulest smells ever.

Iron X looks like this when it's working.

Iron X - it removes all surface traces, much, much more effectively than a Clay Bar.

I had a spot on my Z4 that was so bad I thought it was actually coming through from under the paintwork, sprayed Iron X on it and it disappeared completely smile

Any alternatives that can be brought off the shelf? Iron X seems to be available exclusively over the interweb.

What about wheel cleaner or will that damage the paintwork?

A clay bar, as someone said earlier. You can bring that off to your heart's content.

The gloves go up your nostrils, right?

I meant anything similar to spray like Iron X

I got it allover my hands the first time I used it and it's a bugger to get rid of the odour from your fingers.

@OP
You could use a claybay as said above but IronX is quite cheap (£10 from cleanyourcar) and will be much better and easier than a clay bar.

Funny question but why would you see specs of rust ON the paint? I have had lost of metallic cars and never noticed this happening.

Its iron fallout.Usually small iron particles deposited in the brake dust from other cars.It sticks to your paintwork and is a bugger to get off.Once it gets wet it rusts and can show as an orange speck.
Claying can remove it but if it is bad any good detailer will spray the car with Iron x and it just dissolves the stuff.

It does pong though.I have a spray bottle of the stuff in my shed and it has stunk the shed out even in a sealed bottle!!

Amazing stuff though, particularly on alloys with ground on brake dust.

Same here. I'm lazy when it comes to cleaning cars and never had a problem previously - even with French cars!

Paintwork on Japanese cars are notoriously thin. I've got some blemishes caused by bird droppings which I've gotten away with with other cars.

Definitely a kick up the backside to grab the sponge and bucket!
