What's your favourite engine?
Discussion
From your own experience, what's your favourite engine? In the interests of balance, you can nominate one petrol and one diesel (although I appreciate that a diesel engine is never going to be in a top 10 of all time greats)!
Personally, I loved the straight six on my 325i. Great noise, not that quick but a nice linear power delivery. Generally, I prefer a larger NA engine for this reason but the 2.0TFSI in the Golf GTI and 2.5T 5-pot in the Focus ST have also impressed me, as they are turbocharged and quick but still have that linear power delivery. The 2.0TFSI would certainly be better on fuel but the ST engine shades it for power, tuneability and character IMHO.
As far as diesel goes, I can only really comment on the VAG and PSA diesels. The 2.0 140bhp PD would be my choice for performance, although the 1.6 HDi ist still fairly quick and more refined. So there's my choice. I'm sure many of you have experienced better though.
Petrol: 2.5T (Focus ST)
Diesel: 2.0 PD (140bhp)

Totally with you on the straight six format for a petrol engine. My preference is for Jaguar XK engine of 1948 origin. On your point about BHP, this is somewhat arbitory surely, because my 3443cc Jaguar was only good for 210BHP, but with racing development they are regularly reving to 8000rpm and putting out over 380BHP from a 3781cc upgrade of the basic same XK unit.
I'll stick to cars that I've been in, or I could sit here all day considering which engine is my favourite.
Petrol: E39 M5 V8 - plenty of torque at the bottom but doesn't run out of puff towards the redline. A V8 that likes to rev in a luxury saloon seems an odd choice at first, but it just works so, so well. Sounds incredible too.
Diesel: I've been in loads of smoke boxes, but I've never found one with an engine I like yet, the clattery, awful, soot chucking things. The best diesel engine is one that switched off imo, or comically running out of control at the side of the road, post turbo oil seal failure.

Why? Because that's what freedom looks and sounds like.
In a car?

12.7 litre 60 Series Detroit @ 430hp. Brilliant engine
Sisu 44CTA, which to those that don't know is a 4.4 litre, 4 cylinder diesel with 145hp. Never has such a small engine given so much grunt. Grunt by the spade full.
Cummins B5.9. Utterly reliable and grunty, just a shame the fuel pump can be a bit sensitive.
Car engines, meh.
