This has got to appear on a 'loons on the road' TV show.

Sunday afternoon - (it was pretty windy with some strong gales and gusts but not as bad as in the West Country), I was driving along M2 to London. Somewhere around Bluewater I saw an MX5 parked on the hard shoulder.

The roof was down BECAUSE he was carrying a mattress and bedframe - assembled - sticking up out of the back seat - couldn't see anything in the way of straps - I guess he thought the weight of the mattress would hold the bedframe down in the car.

He was on the hard shoulder and standing by the side of the road - on the driver's side - everyone's passing by at minimum 55ish - he's putting on his grey/black (road surface shade) anorak - he had the hood up and was pulling the strings tight under his chin - presumably so the hood didn't blow off when he started driving again.

It was fairly busy - it's the M2 after all - and he didn't even have his hazard lights on.

I fitted a fifty litre compressor in mine, with the passenger seat removed. Id considered a hardcore journey home, but decided to use the hard top as it was freezing (removed to fit boxed compressor end in, then refitted)

Driving on the m4 near Bath last wednesday when the first storm was hitting and to my surprise saw a guy in a Caterham drive past. Top marks for effort clap but I wouldn't have like to have done it.

I see problems with this post.

I've been that guy. Went to pick up a bumper in my mx5 from a guy 15 miles away. Was a bit drizzly but I thought I would chance it.
No sooner had I got there and put the roof down and bumper in the passenger seat, it began to pour. I had no choice but to drive home.
The looks I got were hilarious, and tbh after 10 minutes of being pissed off I actually started to laugh.
Draining and drying the car wasn't so fun when I got back though!

Some of the highlights of my MX5 driving have been getting caught out in the rain laugh, this was the main reason both of mine have had leather seats laugh

A few of us got caught out coming back from the Bromley Pageant of motoring.Absolutely pi$$ed down (as in massive amounts of spray on the motorway, black sky etc etc) but we didn't bother to stop and put the hoods up.I didn't even do my windows up hehe

To be honest, apart from some water being pushed round the front part of the door frame, there was very little coming in to the car. It's a different story when you stop at a set of lights of course..

best i managed was 4 wheels in my mx5 mk1.

2 on the floor jammed between the glove box and the seat. 2 sitting on the seat with the seat belt round them. they were wide wheels so stuck up a fair bit.

as for winter with the roof down, i found the fabric hood did very little to keep heat in, and found no difference with the roof up or down as long as it wasnt raining. i had the roof down at midnight driving through down with the roads covered in snow, looking up at the stars was great. everyone else huddled in their little bubles.

A few years back I'd been to a Xmas party in London, but driven down on the Friday to Woking & left my car there. Saturday afternoon, I get back to the car & it's one of those beautiful winters days - blue sky & sunny but freezing cold.

Perfect convertible weather so I jump in the car, roof down, heated seats on, Happy Mondays on full volume & set off back up to Lancashire.

All was going well until I get to the M6 just above Birmingham & it's contraflow for about 15 miles. Not a problem, all is still well with the world - I'm driving a nice BMW 330, it's a week before Xmas but I'm now off until the middle of January.

Until it starts to piss it down. I'm not talking drizzle here, I'm talking the sort of rain that gets a mention on the news. There's no hard shoulder as it's coned off & I'm in the contraflow anyway. I've got nowhere to stop so have to drive about 10 miles in the rain at a speed which seems to divert the rain which hits the windscreen straight into my lap.

I eventually get to the services at Stafford & spend about an hour trying to dry the car out with a roll of the blue tissue stuff you get on the forecourtlaugh

Not my finest hour!

It is miserable as sin here this morning and as I drove to work I saw a man putting lengths of wood in his passenger seat and they were sticking up and out quite a long way. A red Morgan of some kind. Hero.

I had to take the roof down to put a 7ft Christmas tree in mine on Sunday. The Sunday prior to that I was battered by a big hail storm, which was a little sore.
+1 for watch those hailstones. We were out in the MGB once when a hailstorm started while we were on the M40. In rain you can speed up and send it flying clean over the car, try this with hail and it just hits you harder. I stopped under a bridge and put the roof up. Luckily it survived the hail. The TF has its hardtop on now, anything big to collect we use the Fiat estate, I must be getting old.

It was the tying the strings of his little hood tightly beneath his chin that really did it for me - I just thought, aw... bless!
