Hi all

I currently have an E39 530i sport manual and keep toying with the idea of selling it.

So im faced with a few choices with my budget being 11k max, i would prefer to spend less though, here is a list of cars i've shortlisted, i would really appreciate any thoughts and insights especially into running costs.
I have had to spend a fair bit on my 530i and average around 24mpg. I would consider diesels but most of them seem to be overpriced and have too much potential to go wrong

So here's my shortlist

E90 330i sport (manual)
E46 330ci sport (manual)
E36 328i sport (manual)
E39 540i sport (preferably manual but would consider auto)
Jaguar X350 4.2 sport
Jaguar X350 XJR
Audi A4 2.0T quattro
Audi A4 3.2FSI

OR

Just keep the 530i and spend some money making it mint?

As you can see that is my shortlist but i am open to other suggestions please have in mind i am 23 so insurance on M3's and M5's etc is out of the question however the XJR is the same price for me to insure as the E90 330i (£950 fully comp)!!!

There are a number of cars there which look like a downgrade rather than an upgrade. Why would you sell it for a 328Ci? Or an Audi A4?

Either upgrade it, or keep it. Perhaps the only 'upgrade' on that list is something like the XJR.

I 'upgraded' my 530i Sport manual to an E92 335i. 3 months later I sold the 335i and went back to the 530i. Very hard cars to replace, an E46 certainly won't do it.

I have very briefly toyed with replacing it with a 630i, but the electrics scare me.

It really is a tough one to replace, I tried replacing it once and went back.

Hi Fox

The audis would be newer than the e39, but i don't know if they would be a better car overall?

I lean towards and E46 mainly due to the fact most come with heated leather, harmon kardon and i think i would like something with a bit more of a sportier edge. The E36 328 is on there purely because they are great.

The XJR and XJ8 i am touch and go about due to perceived running costs.

I'm assuming you are looking at B7 Audi A4's - these are basically just a facelift of the B6 which came out in 2000. It's hardly a huge leap over the E39 (And is quite similar inside, infact). I've never driven one that I preferred to the E39 - it's certainly not more 'sporting' in the way the E46 would be.

The 630i sounds like an interesting choice - the rest of the list I wouldn't swap an E39 530i Sport for no matter how much money you gave me tongue out

Keep the 530i, then in 2 years when you hit 25 swap it for an m5 when the insurance drops.

Nice idea Bryan.

So the audi's are nothing special then?

Thoughts on the XJR and XJ8 sport?

I would be concerned about the reliability of the jags, potential for stuff to go wrong and noone to turn to, as they aren't exactly the most popular of cars.

XJ X350 has some common issues, but no more than the E39.

I went from a E39 528 to a E46 330, and hated it.

Sold it for the Z4 within 6 months.

Replaced a much loved 03 530i Sport with a 07 A4 2.0T FSI. The Audi lasted 6 weeks, they tick all the boxes on paper but are very disappointing and I'm an Audi fan. I had a C5 A6 for 5 years and 70k + prior to the E39 and currently have a A8 as a winter smoker but the B7 A4 was very very bland.
With regard to the E46 I tried both a 330 clubsport and a well sorted M3 but they are nowhere near as well put together as a e39.
E36's are great but will be a big step down unless you buy a minty minty low mile 328 sport and don't drive it.

An XJR would be hugely different to your 530i and while your BMW isn't slow, the XJR will reaffirm what horse power can do to a car.

Sadly no manual and the Jag is setup softer and more comfy (although if you wanted to spend some in the aftermarket you could make it more aggressive). Quite a different type of car from your current, but a good experience IMO.

Also remember if tuning appeal the supercharged V8 can be provoked to over 500hp should you want too.

Jaguar for many years has continually beaten Audi, BMW and Mercedes in reliability surveys. So make of it what you will.

Driving one would be your best bet. Personally I think the Jag is a better car than your 530i, sure the BMW is fairly taut and the manual helps. But it's a big heavy car still. The Jag will simply be a nicer place to sit and have a heck of a lot more shove when you floor it.
