As the title says really, does anyone have any suggestions of cars you can insure as a classic car that are decent and fairly quick?

As an example, I've got a MG ZS 2.5 V6 (180 bhp) insured on a classic car policy for £169 a year. It's ideal because it's a second car which normal insurance companies are wanting £800 a year for despite me being 32, mainly because I can't use my no-claims bonus because it's already being used on our main car. Even with no-claims it doesn't drop much.

I've also got an MG TF on a similar policy.

I've been thinking of getting rid of both and getting something different, but the insurance costs are what are putting me right off.

Basically, something fun, we have a child on the way so something a little more practical, and under £3000.

Can your partner drive? Look at putting a car in her name assuming she has some no-claims bonus.

My 1986 RX7 was insured as a classic, and would have been quick if it had been a turbo.

I'm pretty sure my E34 535i would have counted too.

If you don't have a "main" car you might have trouble insuring your car as a classic, and you might not build up a no-claims discount.

What's wrong with using the MG as a family car?

You've got a TF on a classic car policy? How does that work?

Just to confirm, we've got a main car we use that gets all the mileage put on it.

Not sure how to answer that? It's a specialist MG insurer that classes the TF as a classic once it's 10 year old.

3K would get you a possibly somewhat ratty Lotus Excel. Go up to 4K plus and you could get a nice one. Fast, decent, and practical for a small family, with steel impact and roll protection to persuade those unsure of plastic cars.

Is you're MGZS V6 a Saloon? What colour is it? Mk 1 or Mk 2, and have the cambelts been done?

If you are thinking of getting rid then I may be interested......I'm thinking of one as a second car....

E30 325i touring, manual if you can find one.

But if you can get a ZS on a classic policy, can you get a ZT on a classic policy? Friend and fellow PH'er had a V6 Estate, he loved it

To be honest, not much, just looking for alternatives (if there's any).

The problem with the ZS is it's a bit tatty, I bought it from a scrap yard needing a new engine and I'm currently trying to tidy it up. I've considered getting rid of the ZS and the TF and buying a Mk2 ZS instead, something that's had a little more love and car.

Yep, I pay £260 a year, apparently that isnt that cheap and should be under £200.
