It gets expensive changing cars these days and I'm sure there must be people who wonder like I do whether there are any sites where you may strike a deal with someone who may have something you are looking for and also be interested in your car.

Going the dealer route is just too expensive.

Example; (not a plug for my car as I've not advertised it and not posting details here) but my current car cost me £5750 6 months ago but I no longer need a large tourer as I also have an L200 twin cab so I'd either like a smaller warm hatch or something like an S2000 or a Z3.

If I go back to the dealer they'll give me about £3k for which is a huge hit in just 6 months but circumstances have changed and I now have 2 cars that do very similar jobs. The L200 is a bit agricultural but a good load lugger for work and seats 4 in comfort so that is the one I need to keep.

A google search revealed nothing.

How about a PH sub forum just for people to post up what they have and a value and what they are interested in for others to respond to with whatever they have to offer?

I know the classifieds have a note to say whether the seller is interested in a p/x but most say "no"; whereas a dedicated forum would include only those who are interested in a bit of wheeling and dealing smile

I'm sure it's the kind of thing our Garlick would browse a fair bit wink
How about it Paul?

I like the idea, it may even be as simple as ticking a "swap box" in your ad.
I'll swap my 156 v6 for a 911 please. smile

Non-runner E30 325ix for an as-new Veyron SS or a vintage Ferrari.
Edit - I'll insure and tax the BMW for you if you'll do likewise on the Bugatti/Ferrari for me. S'only fair.

Yes OK, I guess it doesn't go without saying that it would only work if people have realistic expectations of values smile

Think it's a good idea, an area specifically for people wanting to swap. Good to see what pops up

I think its a good idea. You already pointed out that the swapper would state a value for their car. So, just like any for sale ad, you as the other swapper would discount it if it was ludicrously over priced. So, all the 'show' cars would just get annoyed. If something exists by March when I'm ready to sell the defender, I'll consider it....

I like the idea but I can't see PH ever sanctioning it.

They make their money from the classifieds & adverts & surely so you'd end up with a forum full of newbies just joining up to post their car for free as a thinly veiled for sale advert.

Of course - make it a hidden forum for users with X amount of months or similar criteria, no traders etc and it might work and wouldn't detract too much from the money making side of PH.

It'd be an interesting browse if nothing more.

This thread could become a swap thread smile

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/use...

I think it's a good idea as there is quite likely to be someone out there who has just what you want.

So much money is wasted by going the part ex at a dealer route; swapping like for like value cars seems sensible.

It's an ace idea! Surely it wouldn't even have to be a permanent thing? For example, if someone needed a car to move house in they could swap their MX-5 with my 850 T5 for a month, say? Probably wouldn't work with cars people are more attached to, but there are plenty enough of us with interesting sheds!

Good idea, I think the best way to do it on here would be as an additional tick box in the classified section as mentioned above. That way PH still earns money from the adverts but users have the extra option of swapping aswell as selling.

There's enough cars listed in the classifieds with p/x and swaps listed to make it viable I reckon.
