Hi everyone,

a friend of mine wants to buy a second car and has around £3500max to spend. He would like something quite quick, reasonably reliable and that's about it in terms of shopping criteria.

He is strongly considering Subaru Impreza Turbo estate.....any suggestions?

Thanks!

Interesting choice, I thought price wise they'd be much more than £3.5k

If FUN is the main priority
Smart Clio 182/ leggy or well haggled Trophy
Mint 306 rallye+ change for upgraded dampers and springs
Integra DC2

205 gti6 would a lot of fun for 3.5k. Maybe a Fiat Coupe Turbo.

Someone has to say it....

Plus you could get one with a turbo or supercharger for that.

Just a bit over budget, but with 220 BHP

What's the car for? And when you say second car, do you mean to own two cars at once, or it'll be the second car they've owned?

Impreza Wagon would be practical and fast. But if it's a "second" car I'd say it's just a little too ordinary.

£3.5k would get you a nice kit car (Caterfield type or something else), classics (which can be quick), a TVR or something like an ITR DC2.

He runs a 56 plate Honda Accord as his everyday car, so yes own two cars at once. To be honest, I thought the Impreza was a little 'run of the mill'

In that case:

-will it be kept outside?
-how many miles a month will it be used for?
-for what use, or where will it be used?
-why do they want a 2nd car?
-will it need to haul anyone or anything, of so how many seats/boot size?
-how long do they plan to keep it and are residuals important, or indeed ease of selling it on?
-do they like to tinker on their own car?
-do they want to modify a car?

Cars I'd consider:

-MR2 Turbo MKII
-DC2 ITR
-TVR 350i
-GTM Libra
-Robin Hood 2B/Locost
-Jeep Wrangler 4.0
-Land Rover 90
-Triumph TR7 V8
-MGB GT V8 or other modified ones
-3rd Gen Camaro
-RX-7
-RX-8
-Imprea STI
-Fox Mustang V8
-Celica GT-Four (st205)
-Ford Thunderbird
-Porsche 924
-Porsche 944
-Nissan 300ZX
-Lotus Excel
-Lotus Eclat
-Lotus Elan M100

It’s been mentioned before but a Caterham type kit car would be my choice if I wanted a balls out no-frills sort of car. If I wanted a roof then something like an MR2 turbo or Porsche 944 Turbo would be on the list.
