Today around school chucking out time I was going over a hill which leads down to a traffic light controlled junction. From the top of said hill I could see red and amber were lit, so by the time I hit the bottom they'd be green. I'm about 20 yards from the line as four sprogs stood at the signal crossing box thing sprinted across the road the moment the light for traffic went green. Not only am I not expecting it but I've got momentum and just about managed to slam on the brakes in time and turn left up onto the pavement to avoid them.

Either these kids think that's a good idea or they can't tell the difference between a green light for traffic and a green man for them.

No idea how I managed to react that quickly but I fking st myself. Metaphorically speaking of course.

And therein lies your mistake I am afraid

Have you tried doing a commentary? Its very helpful when it comes to hazard perception.

Well I'm expecting children to be around obviously but I don't expect them to run into the road the second the light for traffic goes green. I didn't think kids were THAT dumb.

Christ! People really do love getting on their high horse on this forum. Sometimes it can be humorous, but drop the crap. Everyone from time to time is in their own zone when driving. So what the OP has said is totally plausible

This.

expecting the unexpected is what makes a average driver a good driver.

IMO if your driving past a school, its kicking out time and kids are everywhere, you should expect one of them to run out randomly.

Well it's not past a school. It's an incredibly busy junction with signal crossings on every side. When someone stands at the box and pushes the button, I don't expect them to run out when my light goes green.

Am I meant to expect a meteorite to fall on the M4?

Always expect the unexpected.

Glad you and the kids were OK though.

Gonna go against the stream here, and advise you to hit them all next time. Not only will they learn a lesson, but you will get major man points.

The point of posting it was to warn others children are growing up confused between what red and green lights mean and they may want to be aware. Frankly if you let your child out alone without them knowing what a green light means then you should go to prison.

But of course the magnificent PH drivers on here will all believe they would've seen it coming and that it's possible for a human being to anticipate the movements of the rest of humankind 100% of the time.

fking pricks.

The only certainty with traffic lights is that if you approach a green light at more than 5 mph someone will blunder into the middle of the road while playing with their phone.

They are. That's part of being a kid.

Slow down around hazards and be ready - in the situation you've described I'd be ready to stop and not maintaining speed cos I knew the lights would be green when I got there.

From your description you were missing basic hazard awareness.

How do you know they didn't make a mistake? Much like you did by not anticipating their movements.

Jeez, chill out.

Well I know I wasn't stupid enough to do that at around 10ish. I'd have slowed down if they were walking in the same direction as me with phones glued to their faces but they weren't. They were stood still, had pushed the button. Looked both ways and then out of nowhere fking sprinted.

THIS.

There's a school near me on a fairly busy road. It's a secondary so the brats are 11 at least & old enough to have a bit of sense, right? Not a bit of it.

One of them got killed a year or so ago 'crossing' the road, leading to the usual good weeks takings at the local flower shop, but before the blooms tied to the railings wilted, these little retards were back running about all over the place, playing 'chicken' with the traffic and pushing each other into the road.

Darwinism at its most effective.

And to OP, yeah you should have probably been expecting it.....
