Tyre insurance was worth it this time
Discussion
So, I had a tyre on my car on 18 August, odometer reading 19950
Last night odometer reading 22242, in the flood, ice and other inclement conditions just about 200m from home, I hit a pot hole and ripped a chunk of the sidewall out, ruining the tyre.
The tyre cost £261.50 and, as part of the haggle around the total deal, I included the fitting company's accidental damage insurance.
I phoned them up today and they are ordering a new one in to fit for me on Monday. No charge for the tyre, just £7 for the valve, balancing and fitting and a %age based on the wear it has already (I reckon its down from 7 to 6).
And, if I want insurance again this time, I will have to pay. It is £7.50. I think I will be taking them up on that.

I've always dismissed this stuff as a tax on the stupid and the tyre shop wringing a bit of extra margin out of the deal. Pleasedit worked out for you.
I think generally that is the case but, certainly on top end tyres, its usually possible to get it included in part of the 'price match' negotiationsTwigtheWonderkid said:
Mods...OP's post says he took out insurance, it was good value and they are paying the claim.

They haven't fitted the tyre yet.. there's still plenty of time for some unforseen clause or attempt for the company to wriggle out of it Please delete this inflammatory thread.

OP, please revert and tell us what excuse these insurance crooks used to no pay up. And none of your "they paid up no issues" nonsense.

I didn't know you could buy it on individual tyres when you replace them, but have been selling it for a while as part of a new car sale. With so many cars now running tyres that cost £2-300+ in the event of an unrepairable puncture or other damage, tyre insurance at around a similar rpice for a few years' cover does seem to make sense to a lot of people and we've also had people make claims with no problems.
It's still all just an elaborate con though...
when you're paying over £1k for a set of tyres £30 is not bad to insure them, but usually these costs are fixed and for a set of tyres £50 a wheel or less £7.50 is a bit steep given that by the time you get a puncture you might only get paid out £25 or less if it's half way worn down

Apparently so, Camskill lists those at £220-255 a pop depending on the exact type.
I shudder to think of rubber that really does cost a grand a set.. I'll stick to my 205/55R16s!
Mines more like £1200 a set.I shudder to think of rubber that really does cost a grand a set.. I'll stick to my 205/55R16s!
On 2 cars

But, not usually necessary to change all 4 at the same time, thankfully

Accidental nail in the sidewall is always handy with this type of insurance come to when the tyres got near ish 3mm left on it, ahem.After_Shock said:

Terribly clever idea, though.

with the national tyres one you only get 20% of the value when they're down to 3mm, and i bet they round down, so if you are slightly below 3mm it counts as 2mm and you'd only get 5%, but you do get free fitting of the new tyre, but i can't see a legitimate accident resulting in a pair of tyres ending up with nails in the side-walls on the same day, especially one that happens regularly just before the tyres hit 3mmGassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
