I bought the misses a personal plate for christmas from a DVLA auction.
This has included the transfer fee onto the car. She's informed me that a letter has arrived from the DVLA. It's been years since I've had to deal with a plate and want it on the car asap.

Anyone know the fastest way to do this? Would be nice to have it on the car before the offices close for the festive season.

Fill in the relevant sections on the retention certificate, take it with the V5c and MOT if applicable to your local DVLA office.

For something that straight forward they'll do it over the counter round this way.

Excellent, how long will I have to wait from then to put it on the car? Is it an instant transfer or do you have to wait weeks for a confirmation letter?

DVLA local offices are rare as hens teeth these days. Usually done by post. They send you a new tax disc almost by return (although you have to wait a couple of weeks or more for the new V5).

Registration plates should always match your tax disc. Everything else is detail.

Since the reg number is already in your wife's name I don't think there's much to fret about in any event. If the authorities look in their computer they'll always find the right person even if you change the plates a bit too quickly - it's not as if you're trying to pull the wool.

Don't forget to tell your insurers about the change of reg number!

For a straigh tranfer from a certificate of entitlement they'll do it whilst you sit there.

You'll leave with a new tax disc and a letter of authorisation to get new plates made.

I sent a retention form to my DVLA local office second class post on Tuesday. I received the authorisation certificate and new tax disc in the post this morning (Saturday).

Fantasic service, 48 hour turnaround.

Link to local DVLA offices:

A thread running here (although I was transferring a private plate rather than assigning a new one, but I am sure principle is similar)?

Make sure you take the tax disc as well.

In the past they have done it over the counter for me, however the last time I did this a few months ago they did it by post which took longer. I'm not sure if this is a procedure change or it was down to which office you went to or maybe even luck of the draw in who served me.

Let us know how you get on.
