It's RWD, without snow tyres it will be hideous. I recommend a large 4x4 with heated seats for such occasions.

Not as bad as an automatic Mercedes C180.

Hopefully trolling. RWD in the snow is about the most awesome thing since sex.

I ran my 328i on 255/35/18s for a few winters, great fun! Last year I chucked a few backs of sand in the back when it got really slippery.

Norbert, I'll see your Mercedes and raise you an 800hp Monaro. Completely useless on a wet, let alone icy road!

Hi, I have an E46 330Ci Sport and a E91 320d M Sport that both run Falken HS 439 winter tyres. I stay in central Scotland and have never been stuck in snow yet. Even passing some 4x4's. Winter tyres make a massive difference.

Stevie.

I would certainly put winter tyres on it when it got slippery or snowy but still a little concerned about how it would drive.

On it's own it'll be fine with a light right foot and provided you never park facing uphill.
With winters I'm led to believe they're perfectly practical.
Definitely worth sticking a couple of bags of sand in the boot though, and a shovel......

I ran my 330d tourer through the worst of the snow we had a few years back on, cough, bald, 255/18's. With two bags of sand, and a pair of old curtains all was fine. (used the curtains to back off a friends sloped drive, just chuck em under the rear wheels. The only caveat is that my car was a manual, which mean't you could a) rock the car back forth to get going and b) use the "clutch down" save techniques for when things get a bit too sidewards..... ;-)

Doesn't sound too bad to me. If I got one I would run it on the chunkiest snow tyres and consider getting a fat lass in the boot. Seems to be the most suitable combination.

Serious answer: I've run one on summer Michelin tyres for the last 6 winters and barely slipped a wheel. They're heavy cars with better weight distribution than you'd think and a torquey engine. As long as you're sensible you should have no problems.

The 3.0d is a great engine and it's a great winter car, not a lot of people know this wink but a lot of people drive them in Bavaria and Austria... on winter tyres.

The only issue with the 330D is the insurance on them. I'm only 23 so it's not fantastic which is why I'm looking at the 320D

Sorry that was a typo, the 2.0d is a great engine. I have a 520d but it's a company car and unfortunately I'm not allowed to fit winters, which make it almost useless in the snow. It's all about the tyres.

get as much weight as poss in the boot area, will help with traction over the driven wheels. my 320d was fine in the heaviest snow

It will be terrible.
My 525 was stuck on the drive when we had snow last time, as was my M3.
When I did manage to drive the 525 back from Portsmouth to North Yorkshire it was eventful, lots of opposite lock biggrin
My £600 Golf GTI mk3 was great. I am dreading the snow in this 335d with an auto boxfrown

I suppose you have a steep drive?

I suppose the gritters don't come by your street?

But I suppose it is the car's fault it is immobilised by the weather?
