Just come back from my local town which, when i passed my test 3 years ago was all national speed limit (with the exception of a village), last year they reduced a short stretch just after the village to 40mph, which really didnt bother me because it was always unwise to do much more than that because you have houses both sides and the road narrows around a sharpish left hand bend.

Anyway, ive just come back tonight and they have laid two plastic strips across the road that ive always assumed (when ive seen them in the past in other locations) to be speed measuring devises. Which would be fine if they had placed them on one of the many nice, straight and well surfaced bits of road.
But no, they have placed them just after a crossroads, on an extremely bumpy downhill section and to top it off, its mid bend.
No doubt it will achieve an average speed reading on less than 30 mph and subsequently the whole very rural stretch of NSL with (practically) just one farm along its whole 2 mile length will now be reduced to 40 mph limit.

What sort of cretinous cycling moron/ hippy would go to such illogical lengths to get a speed limit reduced?!

A)What do i do?
B)Do i write to my council and complain?
C)Wait and see if they lower the limit, then complain?
D)Follow the flock?
E)Continue to rant on here but do nothing?
F)Join Brake?

Not enough swearing i hear?

Keep the median speed up - spend the whole night driving to and fro at 90 and it will skew the calculations.

crossed my mind, or one foot on each sensor and swap between legs as quick as physically possible.

might just be counting traffic for another reason altogether.

They did this to a village next to us too - it used to be a 60 with a 40 zone and worked perfectly, no accidents.

Now it's a 30 zone inside a 50 zone frown

my fears exactly. on the plus side, they will never be able to police it, if you know what i mean. But why criminalise drivers for the sake of it!
I think the prosecution of drivers now a days just about sums up the governments attitude at every level!

b) if you're sure that's what they're looking at. But for god's safe, be polite (properly polite, not passive-aggressive) and reasonable - calling them 'cycling morons / hippys' is just going to make them think motorists are inconsiderate arses, and therefore make a lower speed limit MORE likely. If you're not sure, ask (again, politely) if they're there for the purpsoses of speed limit re-evaluation. If you leave it until the new limits are put up, you've no chance of getting them back, and if you do nothing, how can you complain?

Most Councils will have consulations on their websites with any plans for changing speed limits, one way systems etc... which you can submit your views on. I did this last year with Cornwall Council and got a nice email back a month or so later saying due to local opposition the scheme to lower it from 30 to 20 and build a load of humps and chicanes had been dropped and thanked me for my input (which wasn't just moaning about the inconvenience of it).

Some useful reading... http://www.abd.org.uk/speedobj.htm

You forgot the option of, ignore it...there are more important things to be worrying about than a speed limit.

This kind of thing? If so it's only for measuring traffic numbers, not speed thumbup

Correct me if im wrong but these 2 strips monitor traffic volume not speed.

Because of the differences length between wheels they can't measure speed.

Could be wrong but this is what I thought. Im sure somebody will be along soon to verify im correct or a complete pillock.

Yep they're traffic counters not speed recorders. Probably looking at traffic volumes before they resurface/improve elsewhere and use it as an alternative route, maybe, or any one of many other, non-speed related issues.

It counts traffic, speed, and I believe they also make an effort at recording vehicle type too (well, number of axles at least).

Two schools of thought on these - either it's out to check traffic volume and speed, in which case them putting it somewhere that people are going slowly anyway will show that there's no need for speed enforcement there, so you're not going to start finding scamera vans on that road.

Alternatively, and more worringly, a low average speed will show in the data which these days seems to make authorities think the limit needs lowering. Quite how they reach this conclusion between the speed limit and the natural average speed of the traffic is unbeknown to me, or indeed anyone without a vested interest in changing stuff for the sake of keeping themselves in a job.

2-strip ones can also do speed. They don't use the wheelbase, they use the time it takes between an axle crossing one tube then the other. I use them a lot, but only once (about 15 years ago) was it anything to do with speed limits.

Out of interest, why use two strips at all? One would count axles adequately.

My local council have just decided to keep a mile long traffic lighted road thats got brick walls long it to contain us a 30limit rather than up to 40 and redo the traffic light sequence. And they installed 16 average speed cameras along the route at a huge cost to 'protect' (each 2 pairs either side of traffic direction between each traffic light sections).
All they needed to do was simply and cheaply redo the light sequence. But why spend a couple of thousand when hundreds of thousands will do instead?!
Peaks Parkway in Grimsby btw.
