I'm very much in the 'toying with the idea stage' at the moment, I'm over my previous panderings for a V8 are way behind me although selling the Elise is still a distinct possibility, but I digress!

Looking to a possible change to a job involving a 45 mile each way motorway commute plus a couple of 'A road' miles. It might be expensed mileage but I still want something comfortable and economical... See, a long way from the V8 idea now!

What do we think of this for covering the best part of 20k miles p/year?

Well specced, economical and should be a decent motor for motorway miles. I would probably take advantage of the 0% finance as I might as well keep the money in the bank.

As I said, it's just an idea but it makes a lot of sense to do it this way to me.

Hard to see how you can go wrong with this. More than capable of doing what you need, bags of space/practicality, proven mechanicals, decent economy and almost invisible to BiB. As for the price; that'll do nicely. Ah, but not "interesting" is it ? Not right for track days. Merely (?) a rather good form of everyday transport that will happily keep on keeping on for lots of miles. So, perfect for the job in hand.

Mind you, I still miss my old Fabia vRS.

My Clio 172 would be kept for trackdays smile

I have no doubt that it's in no way interesting but I may soon need practicality and frugality! Such is life.

Price is very cheap for what it is, if you are only looking at brand new cars I don't think you'd do better for the money. Worth bearing in mind a new Octavia is due out next year though.

I think it would be a great way to go. Might be more interesting than you think. (I was using "interesting" in a rather badge-snobby way; sorry. Skodas can be likened to the plain girl at the party. Not a stunning looker, or high-maintenance but a lovely personality, sense of humour and b****y good company. All good long-term assets. And you still have the wicked sister for trackdays. clap

My S60 D5 slots into the same category. No, not the wicked sister ! laugh

All in my opinion, of course.

I have this engine in a Superb so a bit slower (heavier) and it is OK. Slow, but fine on the motorway and can get 55mpg if driven sensibly. There is no way you will get the claimed MPG, but that is par-for-the-course on these sorts of engines.

The deal looks like cheap motoring and I really rate my Superb in terms of build and comfort.

Spending £2.5k (ish) on a Volvo S60 D5 SE is 'Plan B' mind, then just running it into the ground.

Did you have any luck with the Octavia in the end? My Dad expressed interest in one so I've been having a quick look but can't find any SE Connects in stock. Just had a dealer try and sell me a lesser equipped SE for more money mad

I decided not to, especially as the dealer said they'd have to find stock.

As it happens I got a PCP quote on a Mk7 Golf SE 1.6D from my companies discounted finance scheme and despite the car being £7k more expensive, the monthly payments were barely any more expensive. <5% APR.
